Have stopped and started the service for Dell network manager, surely this is implicit after a reboot anyway....none of these seem to help, the icon stays yellow on the task bar and the application loops displaying the messages in the last post.
have tried uninstalling /reinstalling, biting the mouse. banging my head on the wall etc. Its pretty frustrating.
I believe either there is a problem with the application that we have downloaded, or the system I am using has some inherent incompatability. Maybe its Java versions or something...
Can you tell me what is a known good base to start from on windows 2000 and xp that definately always workd 100%
As I posted earlier, we're looking into what's going on. The information you all have provided thus far, and your patience, is appreciated.
I don't think there's a fundamental flaw with the application itself (again, one of my previous posts notes that the app server successfully started when installed on the system at my desk using the same file download).
wether it's relevant, the xp pc that i installed it on successfully is a member of our domain (AD).
all the pc's that i previously tried were not. ie workgroup or novell clients. Maybe its just that the pc was a new build though with little else on it.
One question I do have for everyone: when you received these errors, did the systems Network Manager was installed on have multiple network cards (either onboard, PCI, PCMCIA(if you've got a laptop), etc.), or were the NIC(s) disconnected when you were attempting to install Network Manager?

I have a couple of things folks might want to try, I'd like to get feedback on the success rate of these steps.
First, when the appserver fails to go to ready status, simply stopping/restarting the appserver will not allow you back in. You want to stop the appserver, stop and restart the Dell OpenManage Network Manager service, and then open 'Task Manager' and stop any java.exe processes.
Second, try issuing the following change to the c:\program files\dell\openmanage\network manager\oware.cmd file as follows:
Replace Line 8:
set path=%OWARE_USER_ROOT%\oware3rd\cygwin\bin;%path%
with the following string:
set path=%OWARE_USER_ROOT%\oware3rd\cygwin\bin;.;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%
Save the file, and then try restarting the appserver.
Let me know if this has any effect.

Has anyone stopped/restarted the application server service to see if that has any impact?
Just a question that got asked of me this morning. I figure one of you have probably tried this already, and should be able to tell me if that helped.

I tried it, and it did not help in my case. I have also tried rebooting the entire system.

Success...
I just commandeered a new desktop pc before it went to a user.
Spec..P4, 1gb mem, 40gb hdd, SIS based motherboard with onboard everything. (clone from Pacific)
Software. Windows XP sp1, Office pro, sophos anti virus. All windows updates applied.
I have now got the green server icon. Well thats a first, and at least I know the downloaded software is not corrupt.
Shame I cant keep it. :-(

A google search for Port 2606 shows that this port is for Dell's NetMon. (Which I don't have unless OpenManage installed it...

Could you confirm one more thing, then - if you go to Start->Settings->Network & Dial-up Connections, is the inactive NIC the first one listed?

I also have two NIC's, with one disabled. However, the first card listed in Network & Dial-Up Connections is NOT the inactive one...

on the 2000 system that does not work there are 2 nics,
Network Connection (active)
Network Connection 2 (inactive)
on the xp pc that does work there is only one on board nic.
