Bios update on Linux ESX 4.1
Hello,
First off I must admit that I know nothing of Linux. Having said that, I am trying to update the BIOS on several virtual host servers via the ItAssitant and am consistently getting an error that refers to some USB arbitrator service and that it has to be shutdown.
My boss, who manages all the virtual host servers, follwed the instructions but still I am unable to run the update from within ItAssistant.
I'm sure you need more info from me and I'm happy to get it for you. Is it supposed to be difficult to update Linux servers? Should I just forget about using the ItAssistant to update it and boot from some dvd to run updates?
Thanks so much!

The SUU is a repository for the updates. It is not bootable. You would need to boot to a SBUU (Server Build Update Utility). Then you choose to enter the update environment in the menu options. Then you would point to the SUU that you created with the 3 ISO's.
Here is a link for the current SBUU:
SBUU 6.5 ftp.us.dell.com/.../cdu_1.6_core_173_A01.iso
Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thank you Willy M. I did download the three files and combine them into one file and my boss said he can use the ISO file where is resides on one of our file servers. Is this file a bootable type file? So, whether or not I copy this concantenated file to a dvd or just put it one a file server, can I boot from it?

I would go directly to the server and update in order to eliminate any conflicts you seem to be having with IT assistant.
If you have the newer 11th generation servers then you can simply hit F10 at the Dell splash screen during POST. Once you have entered then you have an option for a platform update. This process will reach out to our FTP site and gather the updates available for the specific hardware you have installed. You will need to go to the settings menu to set up the IP settings in order to get out to the FTP site.
If you have an older server then we have an SUU (Server Update Utility) where you can download 3 ISO images merge them together and burn to a dual layer DVD. Here is a link to that:
Go to the folder that you've downloaded the 3 ISOs into, then run the following command to merge the ISOs into a single ISO to burn to DVD:
copy /b om* om651_suu_a00.iso [Windows]
cat om* > om651_suu_a00.iso [Linux]
Ftp download:
Dell Server Updates, ISO 1, DVD, v6.5.1, A00 - 001
Dell Server Updates, ISO 2, DVD, v6.5.1, A00 - 002
Dell Server Updates, ISO 3, DVD, v6.5.1, A00 - 003
• If you don’t have a DVD drive, you can extract the contents of this image to a folder using an ISO extraction tool like WinRAR or mount it like a physical drive using a tool like iso recorder or Poweriso.
• We also have a Repository Manger utility that is available to download. It allows you to create a custom SUU for your particular server model. It filters out all the non-compatible updates. You would download this utility to your Windows workstation, then run the application to create a SUU then burn the ISO. When you create the SUU for the Linux version it should be bootable. Then you can boot to the ISO and it will go thru a process of listing the updates available. At that time you can select what updates you would like to install and the proceed with the process.
• Here is a link to the Repository Manager.

Thanks again Willy! If you don't mind me saying, this is a really cumbersome way of getting servers updated! I think we are going to look into getting the Virtual Center snap in and give that a shot. Many, many thanks for your help today!
