BMC = Baseboard Management Controller
ESM = Embedded Server Management

ESM is a Dell management chipset and standard.  We used this up and through the 7G servers.

BMC is an industry standard based off of IPMI.  Dell switched to this industry standard as of the 8G servers.  They are essentially the same thing.  ESM is Dell only - BMC is an industry standard.  The new 9G servers support IPMI 2.0.
