Computer distrribution

Hello!

I was just wondering, do you know if this is possible?

You see, I was just thinking of getting a large 'supercomputer' and then connecting 50 monitors to it. Would it be possible that each monitor can function like an independent PC? Also, do you know if this is done, and what is this called?

Thank you so much

Hello!  To answer your question, yes and no.  First off before i continue, i'll let you know that i'm not an expert in bussiness and high end stuff, however I have ran around the block a bit.  You can get a computer, a server for example, and connect several monitors to it.  As far as I know, you can have up to 4 monitors running with 2 graphics cards installed.  I'm not aware of any computer system that has more then 2 PCI express slots, but its probably possible to have a total of 4 slots, making 8 monitors available.  Now with a situation like this, you would have to run Virtual Machines for each monitor if you wanted to make them independent of the Server operating system.  It can get tricky and be time consuming but that is an option.

Or you can do what a lot of businesses do and have a central server, running networked 'dummy' machines.  These little computers basically run a VM off the server but you connect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc to the 'dummy' machine (i forgot the technical term for the unit).  This can get expensive but its the better option. That way you can have as many standalones you want connected to the server placed anywhere you can reach an ethernet cable.

hope this helps!
