Defrag problem

I am trying to defrag my laptop (dell inspiron 1501) without success.

I start off with analyse and the message reads that it is unable to do this as a chkdsk is scheduled to run and it tells me to run Chkdsk /f on volume c.

When i run the chkdsk it says that the volume is in use so i schedule it to run on startup.

On startup i get the light blue screen saying that chkdsk is starting, file system is NTFS and then the chkdsk has been cancelled.

How can i get the ckdsk to run fully so that i can perform the defrag.

Thanks for your suggestion SpeedStep no luck with this.  I have tried this before but tried again just in case (you never know it may have worked)

This is what happened.

  • Start.
  • Run.
  • CMD.exe
  • chkdsk /f

The response was:

The type of file is NTFS

cannot lock the current drive

chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process

would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)   Y enter

This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.  So then I clicked

  • Start
  • turn off
  • restart

When the system restarted i had the light blue page appear with the follwing message (this took me several attempts to get as it disappeared so quickly)

  • type of file is ntfs
  • one of your drives needs checking for consistency, it is strongly recommended that you continue.
  • disk checking has been cancelled.
  • windows has finished checking the disk.

It then continues to start up in the normal way but i am still unable to perform the defrag.  By the way there is 58% memory aavailable.

Does anyone have any further suggestions to solve this problem, please

You have to open a dos window aka CMD.exe

then run chkdsk /f

Then restart.

It all sounds very familiar to me - I got the runaround for ages - doing everything it said and getting absolutely nowhere. One begins to wonder if this 'problem' - which is uncommonly common - is not built in to the machine to erupt just after the warranty runs out... hmm?

Finally - and I don't know why it took me so long - I Googled the problem and came across a solution that actually works. You can download a FREE defrag program that works better than Dell's -  Auslogics Disk Defrag.

I wish I could sort out all the problems with this old machine as easily.
