By the way, if the number of servers you are trying to update is large, you may want to consider using OpenManage IT Assistant (ITA).

Besides monitoring, ITA also provides for firmware/driver/BIOs updates. The Software Update feature of ITA allows you to import DUPs and bundles from the SUU CD. You can then compare multiple devices for every package/bundle (device compliance feature) and create a task to push updates to multiple servers in a scheduled fashion.

This will avoid the need to visit each server and manually update the same.

Great that is what I am going to try to do.  I only have 17 servers, but that is still enough not to want to have to do everything individually.  I have ITA installed on one of them, but I cannot get it to recognize any servers except those running 2000.

Luckily, friday is traditionally slow here so I will have time to read - read - read the instructions.

Thanks for letting me know about that functionality.

ITA failing to recognize the servers implies that it cannot communicate with the agent (Server Administrator - OMSA) on the server. You could use the troubleshooting tool in ITA to analyze the problem. Ensure you have SNMP correctly configured in case you use that protocol.

My first guess is that since you mentioned only win 2k servers are getting discovered, the rest might have a firewall enabled on them which is blocking communication between the server and ITA.

Just in case your servers don't have OMSA installed in the first place, you could push it using Software Deploy task in ITA.

Thanks for the info.

I did not have SNMP configured correctly.  It seems when SNMP is installed in 2000 it assumes a community of 'public', but leaves the community blank in 2003.  When I added that in, ITA found them instantly.
