Getting IPMI to work

I'm new to this enterprise level stuff but am trying to learn. I'm trying to use IPMI without success. I issued the following from one of my Linux boxes to talk to my PE2950.

ipmitool -I lanplus -H 192.168.2.117 -U root -a -k 08CEEA0F3D193B2457B1 fru

I get the following back:

Error: Unable to establish IPMI v2 / RMCP+ session

Here is the exact output:

Password:
FRU Device Description : Builtin FRU Device (ID 0)
Error: Unable to establish IPMI v2 / RMCP+ session
Device not present (No Response)

Get Device ID command failed

If I issue the same command buy use 'lan' instead of 'lanplus', it works, but I am concerned that my password will not be encrypted/safe. ipmitool does take a 'cipher' argument, is that needed?
