iDRAC iKVM not working
I have a R710 with an iDRAC6, all firmwares up to date. I'm trying to solve some standing problems with this setup (as it's replicated on a number of other R710's), starting with the Java-based KVM Virtual Console. When starting the JNLP file, I always get an instant "connection failed" in almost all configurations, except for when using Windows 7 or older with Java 6 on 32-bit.
I would like to use it either on Linux or Mac OS X, but it simply won't connect.
I tried Oracle Java 6, 7 and 8 on Debian 8, Mac OS X 10.11 and Windows 10, and none of them will work with the iDRAC. I tried different machines and different internet connections. Just to be sure, I tried with a really old Java 6 JRE on a 32-bit Windows 7 VM, and then it did connect, practically immediately, working fast as well. The host machine stil couldn't connect at all, so it seems to boil down to Java?
I tried with all security features turned off (Java security level to the lowest, firewall off, running as administrator, added the DRAC IP and DNS name to the Java whitelist) on a clean test machine, and stil it would only work with an old Java version and a 32-bit Windows server. Is this a known issue? Is 64-bit not supported and anything other than Windows XP and Windows 7 not supported as well?

Hi,
It could be Java. The most recent manual only shows Windows 7 support. http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics/esuprt_software/esuprt_remote_ent_sys_mgmt/integrated-dell-remote-access-cntrllr-6-for-monolithic-srvr-v1.9_release%20notes_en-us.pdf

The manual indeed only shows old, outdated and unsupported combinations of browsers and operating systems. Does this mean a fully working server basically has to be thrown out because the underlying avocent iKVM software inside the iDRAC simply won't get any updates?

It just means we have not validated the newer versions and they may not work correctly. Sometimes the ActiveX version will work better on newer Windows versions, however that still doesn’t allow you to use Mac or Linux. You may also want to make sure that java is set to direct connect and not going through a proxy.

Our more recent models are moving to HTML 5 but I am not sure if they are doing a similar update for older models to eliminate the need for Java. They do not give us information on planned future updates, so I am not sure if they will update the Java support either.

Are there any plans to have current Java, Browser and Operating System versions validated against the DRAC?
I've tried the ActiveX version, it doesn't work either. I also had to practically disable all ActiveX security features to get the control to load at all.
The connection is direct and actually working, I've verified that on the three operating systems and they all show practically identical packet traces using wireshark. The DRAC basically stops responding 20 packets into the APCP negotiation. I've already reset it warm and cold and to factory settings, tested the connection on a fresh VM, with local LAN connections, different network ports etc. with no change in operation.
The only way to sometimes get it to work is using an old 32-bit OS with Java 6 with all security disabled, which is far from ideal.
