IP address for BMC

Hello,

I am a little confused how I should set up my baseboard management controller to work with IT Assistant.  I believe I tried once to set it with the same IP address as the operation system, and immediately had a network problem, so I tried a different static IP address.  With a different It assistant finds the system twice, once with the Windows IP and once with the BMC IP, and the additional IP doesn’t show only as an IP address with no information or management functions.

What is the correct way to set up the BMC to use with IT Assistant?

Thank you,

Thanks for posting!  Make sure you are dealing with a BMC, not a DRAC card.  A DRAC has a separate NIC in the back of the system with a little wrench icon over it.  It should have its own IP address.  If you are dealing with a BMC, it has very limited functionality and will not discover separately in ITA.

Thanks for the reply.  I am using a BMC, so are you indicating that -

  1. I should give it a different IP than the operating system?
  2. I can not (or should not) use it using ITA?

All I am really needing it for is power cycling the system.  Sometimes when I do server updates remotely on the weekend the a system hangs during reboot, and since I live forty mintues away want to force the system to reboot.

I recommend getting a DRAC card for the system.  If you are trying to get a remote administration tool, the BMC is not adequate.  If the system hangs, the BMC can't reboot it.
