IT Assistant and SQL Express 2008

I have installed SQL Express 2008 onto a Windows 2008 R2 box, when trying to install IT Assistant i am getting "A default instance of SQL was not found on the system. You must install a default instance of SQL before installing IT Assistant."  I installed SQL Express 2008 with the Default Instance option.  Can anybody assist me with this?

Doesn't What's Up Gold use SNMP?  If it does, you will not be able to get ITA to work properly on the same system since you can't have 2 SNMP trap sinks on the same box.  Try it on a different system and see how that goes, it might resolve the SQL issue too.

The issue was i had created a backup from a windows 7 x64 machine and restored to a windows XP machine, i had to change a few paths in the SQL Tables from C:\Program Files (x86) to C:\Program Files.  This has worked now.

So just to confirm, you are at the ITA install screen, and you probably had a message that stated you needed to install SQL, and you clicked that. I will go through the steps that will get SQL installed correctly.

When the SQL Server Installation Center comes up, you should be choosing "New Installation or add features to existing". On the next screen, Agree to the license and click Next, the "setup support files" process runs, and eventually gets you to the "Feature Selection" screen. all the boxes should be checked, and click next. In the next screen called "Instance Configuration", select the radio button called "Default Instance". Notice that when you do this, the Instance ID name changes to MSSQLSERVER, click Next. Here in my area, we click the "use the same account for all of SQL Server services, then we add the account name and password and then click OK and then Next. We use Windows authentication mode and click next. Error reporting, your choice, click next. The installation will complete (hopefully successfully), close that window which will drop you back into the ITA install screen, and it should update the pre-requisites, and SQL should no longer be listed as a requirement. You should not have any "yellow" warning messages there. Then click IT Assistant button to install and ITA should fly from there. if you want to be sure, click the rescan dependencies button to see if there are any warnings.

Hi, thanks for the response, sorry i have already gone through these steps and got SQL Express installed, its when running the ITA Install part that it comes up with the error.  there are a couple of other databases installed on this server as it is a central reporting server for Sophos and a 3rd party app called What's up Gold.  Could it be that these are already installed that it is causing the error?

Thanks for the response, i already tried the option of installing on another server and this has worked.  I believe it could be down to What's up Gold or Sophos which are already using the Default instance name from the server.

Usually when the test email works but the alert emails don't there are a couple things to check.  First, did you use a valid email address from your server for To and From?  I suggest putting your email address in both slots.  After that, see if your email server is rejecting the emails.  They look like they come from an open relay, so you need to allow it for your ITA box.

Thanks, I have tested using my own email address in the To and From field and this doesnt work.  I have also done the Tools - Troubleshooting Tool - Services Tier Configuration and checked the E-mail Connectivity and it passes this using the To and From email address I put in the Alert.  I have installed this again on a temporary machine and it is working fine on here (only trouble is i cannot use this machine, i need to use the original machine).  It looks like all the tests work fine apart from Alert Test.
