IT Assistant - Assistance Please
Hi,
I was wondering if there's a dumbed down version of the IT Assistant User Guide? I've added a few servers, but they're in the "Unknown" section of the Devices window. I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong...
The way I did it is through Discovery Ranges and right-clicked on Include Ranges. For the host name, I typed in the server name and clicked Next until the server was added.
I just wanted to set up alert emails, ensure that the servers are up and running, and ensure that there are no hardware failures.
I'm just getting into the system admin role so if someone can please help, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks!

If you look at support.dell.com/video under Servers & Storage -> Systems Management -> ITA there is a 4 - part video that will walk you through install through alerting. You can turn off CIM if you are trying to discover servers, the best way to discover servers is using SNMP.

I just enabled CIM and it moved a few servers to the Server section in the Device window. However, I see an exclamation point next to their names and when I clicked on Device Details, there's an exclamation point next to Server Administrator under Software Agent Information. What does that mean?
There are still a few servers under the Unknown section of the Device window. Is it because they're old servers?
I'm still trying to figure out how to send alerts and everything...

CIM and SNMP shows different statuses. Attached is what ITA shows. When I had it using CIM, all of the servers had the same Software Agent Information. When I changed two servers that were using CIM to SNMP, it changed.
Software Agent Information
Agent Global Status
Agent Name
Agent Description
Agent Manufacturer
Agent Version
Server Administrator
Management software for Dell systems.
Dell Inc.
6.4.0
Hardware Agent
Microsoft Windows Hardware Agent
Microsoft Corporation
2.0
Inventory Collector Agent
Provides information about devices running on the local system
Dell Inc.
6.4.0
This is the CIM way. There’s an exclamation point for Server Administrator.
Software Agent Information
Agent Global Status
Agent Name
Agent Description
Agent Manufacturer
Agent Version
Server Administrator (Storage Management)
Configuration and monitoring of disk storage devices.
Dell Inc.
3.5.0
Server Administrator
Management software for Dell systems.
NA
5.9.5
Inventory Collector Agent
Provides information about devices running on the local system
Dell Inc.
6.5.0
This is the SNMP way. There’s an exclamation point for the first two Agent Names.
Can someone please help me understand why this is so?
Thank you!

Thank you very much!
So SNMP is a more granular "check-up", correct? I know my PERC firmware needs to be updated so I understand that the Storage Management has an exclamation point. However, I don't understand the Server Administrator version 5.9.5 when in fact the OpenManage Server Administrator is version 6.4.

here is why you are seeing the different versions. CIM and SNMP talk to the target systems differently in ITA and dont report the same agents. Ex. on CIM, it is telling you the version of the overall "family" of OMSA that is installed on that system, which is 6.4. Under SNMP, it is reporting the version of the Storage Agent and the Server Administrator Agent. the last one, the inventory agent, those should be the same if its the exact same system.

5.9.5 is the version of the server administrator "Agent". The version of OMSA is 6.4, which is the overall suite of agents.

Ok, thank you. I guess I have to attempt to update the software to see. Can you please tell me where I can get the Software Update Repositories file?
I'm also getting the -Xmx384M error message. I have added it to the parameters, but I'm still receiving the same error message after reopening the session as well as restarting the services.

Ok, I found out where to get the Software Update Repositories files which is on ftp://ftp.dell.com/sysman. I have downloaded the om651_suu_a00.iso.001, 002, and 003. I have also issued the command "copy /b OM* OM_651_SUU_A00.iso" which has combined all three files. I am not able to burn it since I do not have the media to hold a 5 GB file. I assume this is not necessary since I can (presumably) point the Software Update Repositories to the local drive that contains the SUU file and update.
I still cannot figure out how to resolve the -Xmx384M error message even though I have added that parameter to Java. It looks like "-Xmx384M -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=true" and have reopened the session.
Can someone please help me with this problem I'm having?

For some reason, ITA is now allowing me to open up Software Updates... Go figure...
Now, I'm encountering another error. When importing the System Bundles from my local C:\ drive (and checking Overwrite Existing Packages), it just hangs for a long time. It just says "Import in progress..." and it's been running for about two hours.
Is this normal?

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong when importing the System Bundle from my local drive? I see that it has three sessions on my SQL Server...

Well, I uninstalled/reinstalled ITA and Java and increased the -Xmx parameter to 512M... I now have 9 sessions on SQL Server when I'm importing the System Bundles, but it just says "Import in progress..." and stays like that.
Can someone please help?
