R610 - System Services Update Required

Hello and thank you for the time helping me with this.

To start, I have many Dell servers, so I am not extremely new to this; however, the other ones have just worked from the start. During boot, I get the "System Services Update Required" instead of the option to hit F10. I have briefly installed Windows 10 (yeah, I get....unsupported) on it, but that was just to quickly update the bios and other fun things since apparently the life cycle controller doesn't work for Dell R610's anymore. But I can't get the life cycle controller to even open NOR can I get the iDRAC to work. I have now installed TWO different and complete iDRAC express and Enterprise cards. This, I think, all deals with each other, but I do not know how to fix it. I have seen instructions to use the "live disc" of CENTos, but I have downloaded the ISO and tried to install to rufus only for rufus to tell me that it is a corrupted image file or something. I have opened the ISO just fine in my desktop using WinISO and ImageBurn, so I know that is not the case. Ideas? I just want to get the iDRAC to work (default ip was 0.0.0.0. then I changed the IPMI from LAN to "no" and it pulled an IP of 192.168.0.120, which is weird as my internal IP is 192.168.1.1 subnet. I even manually changed it to one in my local subnet and I STILL couldn't access it)

Hi @SkipDiver,

You can try re-download the live CD for R610 here: https://dell.to/3rmszMm. It would be good to check if the checksum is correct based on the provided info on the support site.

Alternate for updates, you can try using the SUU (Server Update Utility) to try update the Lifecycle Controller.

Here's an old thread about the Update Required message during boot: https://dell.to/3FSF06E, probably it can help you or you have already came across it.

Can you give more details on iDRAC connectivity. Did you have iDRAC express card only on the server or have both express and enterprise card? Are you getting any error related to iDRAC during boot? Can you also check whether iDRAC network is configured in Dedicated or Shared mode? If it is in dedicated mode (iDRAC Enterprise only), then you need to have network cable connected to iDRAC enterprise card for iDRAC to work. If it is in shared mode you need to have network cable connected to one of the LOM port based on configuration

Hello Shine!

Thank you for your reply. I have the Express and the Enterprise on the server. Both came with it when I received it and I just recently bought two more pulled form a working system, as I had started to believe they were faulty. I have found out, they weren't, as the new ones do the exact same thing.

I have configured the iDRAC as dedicated so that it could pull an IP from the router. Of which, like I had stated, does not show on my current subnet. I had to manually program the actual IP, Subnet, etc on the front LCD panel. Still won't be seen on my network like the others. I have had a dedicated CAT6 cable connected to the iDRAC and to the LAN 1 ports since the beginning. Both have lights just a blinking away, still cannot see the iDRAC on my network. The LAN ports work, as I have booted to both Windows 10 and to a LIVEv3.0 system for diagnostics and I can access the internet just fine. iDRAC just is.....blocked or something weird. That "System Services Update Required" still shows where you would normally hit F10, so I cannot change anything in there. When it boots, it does show the IP4 as the address I chose with the correct IP, DNS, subnet, etc, just cannot be accessed via a browser nor ping'd.

Hello Joey!

Thank you for your response. I have downloaded the Live CD v3.0. It does say during boot that it is for 12g-14g servers. I know I have an 11g server, but it seemed to have let me into the operating system. I will try from there with drivers for that.

Thank you for also sending me that past thread. I have actually read that and attempted that before I submitted this inquiriy. The issue is that the iDRAC just doesn't work. I have set it to DHCP initially and at first it was just 0.0.0.0. I then went into the ctrl-e situation and changed it from iDRAC on LAN to dedicated and I have had a separate CAT6 cable connected to my switch since the beginning. I finally got it to pull an ip, but it wasn't on my subnet, which I thought was weird. It pulled 192.168.0.120. I am on 192.168.1.1. So, with that knowledge, I manually updated the iDRAC and submitted it to 192.168.1.211. It took it just fine; however, I cannot see it on any browser, I cannot ping it nor can I see it in my router GUI under my DHCP server address reservation listing. Its like its not there. I can see the blinking lights both orange and green, so I know there are transmissions, just not linking with my current network, of which I have 3 other PowerEdge servers of all ages working just fine with their iDRACs and their separate LAN connections.

Hello SkipDiver,

For  "System Services Update Required"

Select in post. Navigate to System Services and set to Enabled. Save, exit, reboot.

(if it shows currently Enabled… set it to disabled, save, exit, reboot to Ctrl+E and Enable it again.)

Then try to update the LifeCycle controller.

https://dell.to/3d2qTzq is the default. When you reset iDRAC to default this would be expected.

Try configure your laptop to 192.168.0.121 and direct connect to the DRAC Dedicated port or shared LOM.

(If you are using dedicated port try a LOM also to rule in/out the DRAC dedicated port. Be sure the configure the DRAC to the LOM you are testing.)

If necessary clear browser cache and try different browsers.
