R720 Hard Drive Issue

I am attempting to bring a retired R720 back to life for my VMWare test environment.  I had issues with the H310 causing the server to not boot into ESXi so I removed it and the raided hard drives.  I just want to toss an old 3TB drive into it so I can create a datastore for my test guest VMs.

How do I get this server to recognize this hard drive?  Does it care that I just ripped the PERC card out or what am I missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How many drives supported on the backplane of R720 you have? Are you having 3TB SAS or SATA drive? If there is no PERC card then you need to connect the backplane to the motherboard so that software raid can detect it. This is supported with 4 X 3.5 backplane R720. You also need to connect the backplane as shown in Figure 3 of below link for software raid to detect the harddrive.
