Can Latitude tablet run without a battery?

Hello, I got a Latitude 5179 which will not turn on. The battery was swollen so I removed it. Can tablets run with AC adapter only when the battery is damaged or not installed at all? I dont know if I should buy a replacement battery or the motherboard is damaged as well.
