Dell Venue 8 4.4 KitKat glitches

I got the update around 12am CST. Since then I have noticed the following:

Random screen freezes

SD card not registering

Apps not working

Lower tolerances to internal heat build up

Jerkiness when scrolling on the web and Facebook.

Does anyone know if Dell did a soak test of this build before they released it?

Mine has worked fine since the update until yesterday.  Granted I don't use this tablet all that much.  (I have several).  Yesterday I used the Amazon shopping app.  It worked fine until I tried open the details on a particular product.  It opened with about 50% of the screen blacked out in random square patches.  I toggled back and forth a few times between the list of like items and the detail on one until the tablet froze and rebooted itself.

Received another OTA update this morning that was about 40MB in size.  We'll see if this fixes any bugs.

One more screen shot from after the com.android.systemui error has occurred....wallpaper has changed and navigation buttons disappeared.

I received and applied the 40Mb OTA firmware update last night.  OS is still 4.4.2.  The update has not resolved any issues for me.  The frequent ones are:

  1. Google Maps streetview still displays just boxes of color
  2. Black boxes still appear over the webkit browser and apps like Google Play Newsstand and Amazon that use the embedded browser
  3. Still receive periodic error message of com.android.systemui has crashed; resets my walpaper to the default pale green; on screen navigation buttons no longer display

Screenshots from today below taken after the firmware update.  Did anyone else see improvement from the update?

So what, if anything, has this supposed update updated?

Same old problems on this end.

This is ridiculous.

Same glitches continue...  Settings crash the minute I press the home button plus as usual there is this issue with 8screen freeze which also hasn't been addressed

Just out of curiosity, what are those of you experiencing the black boxes doing at the time they occur?  For example, reading news articles, websites, etc.

My happens primarily when I use Feedly to read articles.  That's when my crashes occur and I have to reboot.  I can then read for awhile without the black boxes but, soon they return.

Feedly has updated itself at least once, perhaps twice in the last month but that hasn't help my situation with the black outs!

Applied the little update that rolled out to me a few hours ago and rebooted... and my V8 saw the SD card for the first time in weeks and has continued to see it over several reboots. I'm cautiously optimistic that at least the SD card issue has improved with this little update.

Street View from Maps is still blocky though as Chicago_Jeff re-demonstrated. Other than that I haven't used it enough since this little update to say whether any other issues have been improved upon.

It's a good sign and I'm thank at least that they are working on things, though a bit more communication would be welcome.

I'm not sure that I was having issues with my SD card.  What can I do to test if it is? The card still shows in the storage area.

PapsJohn, the black boxes for me are triggered by any app that uses the stock Android WebKit rendering engine including first party apps like "Browser".  Once the black boxes occur my device becomes quickly unstable.  It will issue a hard error within a few minutes when the system UI crashes.  I have to hold down the power button to trigger a reboot to restore the device to a usable state.

Google makes Chrome browser for Android.  It does not use the native webkit engine nor does it cause black boxes and device instability.  Chrome is not my favorite Android browser, but it is a partial work around for content access via a browser.

Can anyone else confirm that this update solved SD issues - my sd stopped working after the 4.4 update - card often not recognized and when it is its always blank/not supported (although it works everywhere else)?

Thanks!

Well, in my case the tablet basically stopped recognizing any SD card. In the rare instances it does see an SD card, it's always "blank/not formatted" although they are formatted and work in every single other device I have tried them on.

The only time I see them is when using Feedly.  I haven't a clue what browser it uses to display a news item that I want to read.

I use Chrome as default browser on the Venue 7 and do not have a problem when I access websites directly from it.  And, I've never had the SD card problem.

In my case, the only go access the SDCARD is to fervor it, start the tablet, and insert the card.  Have to do this every time I need to reboot. The patch does nothing for me.

I was going to post I had found a solution for the no sdcard when the update pushed. I took my tablet back to 4.2 then ran all the update including the newest and the sdcard works now.  I think the initial update to 4.4 didn't correctly wipe the partitions correctly.
