I have had 8.1 running on my Latitude 10 no for a few days. It seems quite stable. But you should bear in mind that Dell, quite legitimately, may not support you, if you have any problems with it.

I have had the 8.1 Preview running on my Latitude 10 since the day it was released. It runs well.

Until Dell sells it with 8.1, it won't be supported by them.  Right now the only help you are going to get is from the other people that have posted about it.

So, I have now been running 8.1 Preview for a few weeks. Initially it was very stable and, though the preview lacks some of the enhancements expected in the final version (specifically the updated Mail, Calendar, People App), the changes are generally pretty good, but unremarkable. For instance more tile sizes, the ability to group tiles into sets etc. Search was supposedly enhanced, by integrating it into Bing so searches, unless filtered, return results from the system, (files, apps, settings etc.) and the web. This worked very well until about a week ago, when the whole thing failed. Microsoft's community website for 8.1 preview had many people reporting this issue, but their support people didn't seem to have any solution. They kept trying to say it was a third party issue or that it was specific to the particular machine/setup of the user. The only solution that works (so far) is to uninstall the search function (Control Panel, Programs and Features, Turn Windows features on or off), reboot, then reinstall the function followed by a further reboot. Hopefully this will be fixed by the time the final version hits the market. Generally though a good update with some nice touches.

Microsoft will not charge for 8.1;  by the time it ships, you'll be well past any software support on your system unless you buy an upgraded software support package -- so though it won't cost anything, if you want Dell support, you'll have to decide whether to pay for that support.  You won't get free support for it.
