STREAK Unlock???

Hi,

Is $549.99 Unlock means a factory unlock like a sim free or just unlock for ATT contract?

Cheers,

This is really a good news that they are providing unlock codes. Please reply back in this thread on the procedure and whether the code is common for everyone.

I called dell customer care 800-624-9896 and they agreed to provide to the unlock code through the registered email. They asked all the required details like the e-service no, service tag no and IMEI no. This is really good and appreciate DELL for hearing customer voices. But still, need to check whether the codes are working !!!

Waiting for the unlock code email now.

Ok, I see you just called and they wanted the email you used to buy the streak with. What is the number you called?

i gave the email id with which i have created my account with dell. I used this email id to login and purchase the dell streak. This email id will be where you are getting your order information and other stuff from dell.

I am also waiting for my unlock code - when you call that number, when they try giving you the 3rd degree .. nature of your call .. tell them "connect me with the mobility department."  I told them I didn't want to tell my story over and over ..  Didn't want to keep looking up my order number etc .. they will put you through.

Well this sounds promising - I'm really interested in knowing how the unlock code works for you before I unpackage (again) my Streak and try it out.  Please advise.

It's not always as simple as it seems.

First of which, is the number of people who can't believe that Dell would release a device with Android 1.6 on it.  When 2.2 Froyo is just around the corner.  Take into consideration the number of Streak units that Dell has manufactured.  And I'm sure it was developed with 1.6 was the latest and greatest.  So, with the Streak OS (Android) completed, they loaded up the phones, and got the manufacturing done.  And when it all came down to it, it was less expensive, and time consuming to release the phone with 1.6 instead of opening every package and re-loading 2.2 or even 2.1 on every single phone.  It's much more cost effective to allow the user to update when it is done.

Secondly...  I called the mobility support number as well...  1-800-308-3355.  Pressed Option 3, and asked the support agent for an unlock code.  "No Problem," she said "we're getting a lot of phone calls about this."  I chatted with the support agent for a minute as to why the phones were locked.   From what I understand, AT&T is the company that holds the codes.  Dell is working with them diligently to obtain the unlock codes for everyone who has a Streak, and purchased it unsubsidized.

I have had nothing but great service and products from Dell over the years.  I have purchased 3 desktops, 3 laptops, and now the Streak from Dell.  Every device is great, and customer service is wonderful.

I just rec'd my and lock, call dell support and they said can not send out the unlock code. If you don't want AT&T , you can return it for full refund.

How many times and in how many ways can Dell screw over a customer on one stinking purchase.  You think your phone will be unlocked because you paid extra, it isn't .. you are given the run around for days and finally you think your problems are over because you get great news, you just have to wait for it .. wait .. wait ... "Welcome to Dell .. Yours is here ... and sorry, we lied to you again .. we will not unlock your phone, thanks for letting us use your money for a few weeks ... Don't worry, we will return it to you eventually and you can got buy something else."

I certainly understand the Android version issue and the logistics involved around testing and make sure everything works.   I was prepared to wait until later in the year to get Froyo.  I really like the Streak and will keep it if the unlock issue is fixed before Friday, otherwise I'll ship it back and move on.
