Venue 11 Pro Wireless 1538 WiFi/BT Driver Issue

Back about a week ago, my tablet was unable to find any wifi routers to connect to. I did not turn wireless off, and my phone was able to pick up wireless signals. I googled my problem and found out that the Venue 8 Pro had a similar problem where Windows updates messed up any attempts to connect to wifi for whatever reason, but was unable to find any help for my Venue 11 Pro. I ended up uninstalling all Windows updates and restarting my computer just in case -- didn't work. I deleted the driver using the Device Manager, restarted, then had the Device Manager reinstall the driver -- didn't work. At this point, I downloaded the driver install file from Dell's website and did a complete uninstall of my existing wireless driver, then I re-installed it with the .exe provided by Dell. That worked, and I thought my problem was just an anomaly and that it was solved for good. I redownloaded the Windows updates and there was no issue.

Today during one of my classes, I opened my tablet (it's attached to the mobile keyboard) and went to check my emails. Strangely, my internet was kaput. It wouldn't find any access points, just like last time. My phone had no trouble, however. I reinstalled the driver using the solution above and it works fine now. But now I wonder why my driver keeps failing. Is it fetching an update and the update somehow corrupts my driver? I don't know, but it's annoying. I cannot reproduce this behaviour as I have no idea what would cause it to do this in the first place.

Has this issue been reported before? Is there a fix? I don't want to keep on reinstalling the driver, as that's not really a "fix", but more a workaround until the next time it happens.

Thanks.

  • Venue 8 pro 5830
  • Linksys E4200 V2
  • Router firmware : 2.1.39.145204 (latest)

Hopefully, you can figure this out.

Thanks

Brian, can the same patch be used on a Venue 8 pro?

It is just changing a power profile in WIndows 8.1, so should work OK.

Brian, can you clarify if this new power settings will have any impact on the limited WIFI connectivity after resume from standby problem?

Thanks

Not looking like they have any impact on WIFI, but definitely on WWAN.

I am also experiencing WiFi stoppages on my Venue 11 Pro with Win8 and an Intel dual bank AC-7260 adapter.  It does seem to stop working when I return from sleep mode.  However, even a reboot after a WiFi hangup does not seem to fix it.  The only action that always works is to use Device Manager and disable/enable the WiFi adapter and it starts working again.  Please help.. This is very frustrating and I'm about ready to ask for my $$$ back on this otherwise fine tablet.

I am still experiencing Wi-Fi drops to "Limited" no internet status randomly during actual use.  Disconnecting and reconnecting from the network or turning Wifi off and then back on fixes it.  Note this is NOT a sleep/resume issue, I've never used the feature, opting rather to just shutdown and boot up on use.  This is happening with:

Venue 11 Pro 5130, Bios A05 (latest), A05 Chipset update (latest), with the Power Settings update.

Router: TPLink Archer C7 V1 (latest firmware)

This tablet is also the only device I have (phones, laptops, ipads connect fine) that will NOT connect to this router's 5Ghz band.  It will ONLY connected in a "Limited" no internet capacity, forcing me to use the 2.4Ghz band.  2.4 works fine most of the time, but randomly experiences the issue described above.

1) Model of tablet (e.g. Venue 11 Pro 7130)

Dell Venue 11 Pro 5130

3) Specific model of router that is causing problems

Meraki MR16 AP.  Connected with fiber through a Cisco ASA5510.  AD DHCP&DNS.  No router.

We're using the newest driver on the support page for this tablet.

We have 450 of these.  Someway to install on a network would be great.

No real help from Dell phone support, so I took this tablet to the Microsoft store. I explained to them that I did everything (factory reset, re-install/ revert network drivers, removed Microsoft updates) and still it has no wi-fi after the tablet goes to sleep. It was getting annoying to always have Windows repair the network connection. The Microsoft tech figured it was a bad wi-fi card so they exchanged the tablet for a brand new one.

Brought the new tablet home, set it up and then tested it – same thing happened. I checked the wi-fi router and noticed that the other 3 computers we own (and also in sleep mode) were still connected. So I started to look in the Tablet Control Panel, specifically looking for the Power Management tab on other devices (I had previously looked for a Power Management Tab in the Dell Wireless 1538 802.11 a/g/n Adapter properties but there isn’t one). I did this and it fixed my wi-fi issues:

Unchecked the box for “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” in the Proprieties/Power Management Tab for the following:

Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Devices and Printers ->Device Manager->Bluetooth->Bluetooth Radio

Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Devices and Printers ->Device Manager->Universal Serial Bus controllers->USB Root Hub (xHCI)

So far I have had no issues.

I planned on doing that same thing, the issue for me is that I need to do this on 450 of these.  Good thing to know it works, though.  I just need to find out where to change in the registry.  There is no way to change in Group Policy Power Options, where I've seen people change on the tablet itself under Power Options.

Did the USB Root Hub change fix your keyboard issue, or was that part of your Wifi solution?

I didn't notice any keyboard problems, but it for sure fixed the wi-fi issues.

OK.  Thanks for the info.  We're seeing issues with both.  The fix from Dell for keyboard didn't do anything.  It is related to Sleep/Suspend as well, at least according to their fix, but it did nothing for us.

I'm working on wireless today.
