Hi All,

During replication in CIFS Environment, the Destination NAS Server/Filesystem Can Access (Read Only)  without failover ?

Does each Unity SP boot from the internal M.2 SSD drive?  I know that the M.2 drive is used for vault data, but I was not sure if the SP also boots from this drive.

Hello, I see that "Fail-Safe Networking" is shown in the Spec Sheet for Unity, but I can't find any documentation on how to enable Fail-Safe Networking.  I know that the VNXe did not support Fail-Safe Networking, so I wanted to see if this is supported on Unity, or if the Spec Sheet is incorrect.  Thanks!

FSN is not supported. I will communicate to have the information updated on the spec sheet.

Hi Unity experts.

I'm wondering if storage pool only supports Thin LUNs in Unity? Because I got 2 different answers from e-learning and PDF?

I have five question.

1.This is KB for VNXe but is this KB also applicable to Unity?  https://support.emc.com/kb/468015

It says you need to have 16% empty space in pool to make NAS server, otherwise you cannot create one.

2.

This is KB for VNXe but is this KB also applicable to Unity? https://support.emc.com/kb/465997

When it is NOT over-subscribed, PUHC will fail unless VNXe have more than 5% empty space in the pool.

If so, could you describe how much empty space you need in a pool to upgrade OS.

3.Do you have any recommendation percentage for how much snapshot you need for Unity file and block?

4.Do you recommend to create a pool with system drives or do you not recommend for Unity?

5.When you set multi interfaces for replication, can you set a replication interface per replication session?

Hello King

Addressing #4 Do you recommend to create a pool with system drives or do you not recommend for Unity?

Our recommendation is to not use system drives to start with, because we reserve a portion of system drive for system related storage and so the performance of those drives may not be comparable with similar drives in the pool. But if you run out of space in the other drives and need to use system drives then it is okay to use them.

Thanks !

Hi Jeffey,

In Unity, Unisphere lets you create only thin LUNs and our recommendation is to stick with thin LUNs.

However, in rare cases if thick LUN is required for a specific scenario we may be able to provide an option to create thick LUN via CLI.

Hi Compus,

The Destination NAS Server/Filesystem cannot be accessed without failover.

Thanks !

Hi all

Can i replace CNA port to 10G from FC16G physically?

It does not matter if you need to power off the machine to do it.

currently the CNA port type cannot be changed once it is persisted.

Keep in mind that these days FSN isnt as useful as it once was.

In my experience FSN's were used mainly for two reasons:

1. to connect to two different switches in case a switch fails

2. to save cost and have the standby interface on slower less expensive links

These days most switches can do cross stack/chasis LACP so it is much more popular to solve it this way where you can utilize all links and not have standby links

Yes, we typically configure LACP across switches (so that SP A is connected to both Switch A and Switch B with cross-switch LACP), so normally we don't need Fail-Safe Networking.  However, you'd be surprised how many customers still have switches that don't support cross-switch LACP.  For these customers, they are forced to connect SP A to Switch A only, and in the case of a switch failure, they lose their CIFS or NFS connectivity on SP A.  Is there an advanced setting in Unity to allow for NAS server failover to occur when the physical Ethernet links go down?  If so, this might negate the need for FSN, because the NAS server would failover to SP B, which would be connected to Switch B.
