Consistency Groups or VMware Datastores

Hi,

In Unity you have an option to create a Datastores and/or Consistency Groups. For the Unity arrays is it better to create datastores and the VMs are utilize those datastores or

is it better to create Consistency Groups and within those groups create a LUN for each VM? 

The first scenario you would have less work to create on the array and the VMs share the datastores whereas the second scenario each VM would have it's own LUN that is presented across all of the ESXi hosts. Are there any advantages of using Consistency Groups over creating Datastores? Are there any performance gains with Consistency Groups? For non-SSD arrays or hybrid model, would the Consistency Groups have more spindles across drives than creating datastores? Which option utilizes resources better for the array or from the ESXi hosts?
