Oracle VM admin asks for page 83 id in a LUN

I have 2 Unity 400 arrays and synchronous replication is in place for a couple of LUNs.

From Unity 1 I'm replicating a LUN to Unity 2 and also the other way around.

I have an Oracle VM cluster attached to each of the two arrays and the Oracle VM administrator is asking me about a page 83 item which seems to be different on each LUN / Replica LUN pair. He says the page 83 item needs to be identical on each Primary / Secundary LUN pair.

I don't know where to set this data and one of the posts I can find on this is one from 2008 which addresses a Symmetrix and some SPC-flag.

Does anyone know what this page 83 thing is about?

Q :  the Oracle VM administrator is asking me about a page 83 item which seems to be different on each LUN / Replica LUN pair. He says the page 83 item needs to be identical on each Primary / Secundary LUN pair.

Finally, tried to test this out in lab and noticed that, it cannot be identical as the page 0x83 scsi id derived based on WWN (in my test, it just added number 3 in front of wwn).

In Unity, Replication creates a new dest lun first (different wwn) and then it syncs data from source.

service@unity spa:~> uemcli -no /stor/prov/luns/lun show -filter WWN

1    wwn = 60060160b71a7820f668e4585f5b68d4 (this is source lun)

2    wwn = 60060160b71a78209971e458c77bdf44 (this is dest lun)

And a remote unity array as dest:

service@unity2 spa:~> uemcli -no /stor/prov/luns/lun show -filter WWN

1    WWN = 60:06:01:60:B9:3A:78:20:5D:67:E4:58:62:FA:6C:15 (dest)

At a linux host:

[root@RH ~]# /usr/lib/udev/scsi_id --page=0x83 --whitelisted --device=/dev/sdb

360060160b71a7820f668e4585f5b68d4

[root@RH ~]# /usr/lib/udev/scsi_id --page=0x83 --whitelisted --device=/dev/sdc

360060160b71a78209971e458c77bdf44

[root@RH ~]# /usr/lib/udev/scsi_id --page=0x83 --whitelisted --device=/dev/sdd

The page 83 item is also known as the WWID, not to be confused with the WWN or UUID.

The WWN / UUID will not be replicated to another array and will be different, but what the WWID is is unknown to me. I've opened a case with Dell EMc and the CSE doesn't know what this WWID is either.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

it's not a page in a document, but a page in memory or something. It's Oracle VM specific and I can't find any information anywhere, that's why I'm asking here

He is talking about VPD page 0x83 from the SCSI inquiry command

see  Manpage of SCSI_ID

So if I read this article correctly, this identifier cannot be exactly the same, ever. In my case the Oracle VM admin wants to have this identifier of a LUN on Unity 1 to be the same on its replica LUN on Unity 2, which replicates through synchronous replication.

The only way to get this identifier the same on 2 hosts, is when they're accessing the exact same LUN (on a single storage system).

Correct?

I think so but I am not the FC expert - Vplex might be different

Did you check the Solaris host config guide ?

Thank you very much! This proves the theory that I had as well.
