Problem pre-staging Unity OE upgrade

Question

In the past, I've pre-staged the Unity OE file, e.g. 2.5G Unity-5.1.0.0.5.394.tgz.bin.gpg so it's ready to go when my maintenance window starts. I do this by pretending to upgrade before the window and then cancelling the upgrade wizard after the config step. I never bothered pre-staging the drive firmware file because it is so small the transfer and unpack time is minimal.

However, on the latest 5.x instructions it recommends you always upgrade drive firmware before the OE upgrade.

What I found out by surprise after doing the firmware upgrade first, was that the process wipes out my pre-staged OE file.

Is it possible to pre-stage both the drive firmware file and OE file without them stepping on each other?
