Auto failover is not possible with normal Unity Sync Replication. You would need Metro Nodes or VPLEX on top for that, with a Witness server, too. You have to manually promote the secondary side for normal SyncRep, because there is no way for the secondary site to differentiate between if the primary has actually failed, or if the link between the systems has gone down.
You should be able to replicate existing LUNs with consistency groups.
