Unity and host lun ID's?
Working through a new Unity installation, is there truly no way in the block configuration wizard to manually set the HLUID? Seems like something many people have done for so long, do we just let the array decide HLUID's? Problem I have with that for example is when you add ESXi hosts to a cluster overtime, although it doesn't affect how ESXi works, as an admin/engineer I like consistency across all hosts in a cluster.
Thanks in advance. Jared

Hi Jared,
Not from the wizard but it can be modified from the host properties after assignment.
Select Hosts -> Edit the "host" -> Luns -> Modify LUN IDs to re-order

Thank you for the response, seems like it should be an "Advanced" option during the provisioning wizard. Inevitably, folks will forget to go update things like that after fact, but I'm glad it's still there somewhere.

My understanding is that, through the GUI, you can only choose Host LUN ID when the host has been manually registered. If you register the host by importing from a vCenter, Host LUN ID is automatically managed by the Unity.
Using the CLI or Rest API may add some possibilities but I didn't had time to test.

It seems this option is not availabe if you registered the hosts via vmware tab. It's a big problem, imho, as Unity seems to assign LUN IDs from 0, conflicting with Datastores alredy presented in the ESXis from other arrays.

As I couldnt wait, I decided to remove the vcenter from the Access/VMware tab. Once I did that, vCenter&ESXi disappeared from there, AND I found that all ESXi now appears in the Access/Host tab. I created a LUN via Storage/VMware tab, it choosed the LUN ids he wanted, but then I could modify the ID for all the host, 1 by 1. Not the best solution, but at leasts I could choose my IDs.

For vmware, only vmfs may require this (because it is just a lun) and that is similar to host edit. Other special type like VVOL/NFS dont have HLU requirement by ESX

Dave,
I also did this test and found out what you did that you can only modify LUN IDs that the host see only after access has been given. That’s good to know, but the LUN ID starts at 0. It should really start at 1 and reserve 0 for boot LUNs.
Thanks,
Chris

Unless it's merely for aesthetics, remember that it doesn't matter if you have multiple LUNs that all use LunID 0, as the volume is also mapped to the array ID, so you can have multiples... But I personally like to be detailed and would prefer to set my LUN ID's across the board.
Guess the takeaway here is that EMC should have some advanced options in the GUI, but remember, Unity is a new era, it's geared towards customers that love how easy new startups build things, and that you can click next 3 times and be done...
