Help me Mr Wizard!
I bought my son the Dell Inspiron 1000 about 15 months ago and it is getting unmanageable to work. I believe the IE has been hijacked as the browser always goes to the about.blank web page and states the computer is infected and that I need to by thier tool to fix it. Yeah right! When I start the computer the background is fixed to WARNING! YOU'RE IN DANGER! and I get another message, webscanx encountered a problem and needed to close. this error occured on... please tell microdoft... don't send error report is then selected
Then McAfee VirusScan message, Some components of acvtiveShield are either missing or might not have been installed incorrectly. Please reinstall activeShield. If you have started your computer in safe mode, please restart you computer in normal mode to enable McAfee virus scan. (I receive this McAfee free from Boeing as this is a service they provide to us.)
I installed Ad-Aware se personal 1.06, Spybot search and destroy1.4, Microsoft anti-spyware beta, CWShredder 2.15 and HJT1.99.1
Here is the logfile that I have.

Hi

Your system is very infected but it can be fixed.

It will take a few processes to get it done.

Let's get going! :)

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate " smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT* CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Unzip to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select " Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\system32\hhk.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose " Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white " Delete File" button. Click " Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click " No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, ( please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\ Search Maid
C:\Program Files\ Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\ Log Files
C:\Program Files\ Security IGuard

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

Make sure all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items, if found, then click FIX CHECKED

items to fix

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

My fault, skip over that HJT fix part of the fix and we will get back to it after you finish with the SF fix.

Although reloading Windows should be used as a last result, that is up to you if you want to do it.

Steve,
I went through about everything but am a bit confused. Never heard that before right? I didn't find Security IGuard, Virtual Maid or Search Maid in the Add/Remove programs so there was nothing to delete. I ran killbox and only found three log files which I deleted. What confused me a bit was your statement "Make sure all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items, if found, then click FIX CHECKED" Am I suppose to put a check mark by everything that appeared? I didn't think so, but was unsure. I have stopped at that point prior to starting the download of Hoster. I can start back over if needed or I can take a different route, which I had to do on my previous old win98 pc which was flatten and reload. The reason I haven't done this to this laptop is that my son has no idea where any of the disks are that came with the PC, or maybe they never came at all. I called microsoft and they said that I could borrow anyones XP OS and load it using my code that is on the label on the bottom side of the laptop and go down load the drivers on line.
Which would be best, flatten and reload or continue on with your procedures to get rid of the virus?

Thanks for you help!

I have deleted 1940 tem files  but every time I run the ActiveScan it kicks me off the dial up after I reach 1 virus and 6 spywares. then I get a message that an error has occured and I will be shut down, in which it does just that. I believe that it shuts down while it is checking windows/system32/xxx. I also get the error WebScanX each time I start up, encountered a problem and needed to close... tell micro soft button or don't send button. I chose don't send, and the log on continues. The activescan link didn't work, but I was able to navigate to the site and run the active scan, but with no luck as noted above.
Here is the current log file from hjt.

Please Print this page, you won't be able to see it in safe mode.

please download to desktop but don't run yet:

WinsockXPFix

Copy the text inside the 'Code' box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as Fix.reg (make sure you save as type: 'all files')

Code:------------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LQ]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ohbbackup]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Elitum]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"kalvsys"=-

-----------------------------------------------------
Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 at boot, then use the up/down arrows to select safe mode

Manually find and delete :

- the ENTIRE contents of the C:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\Local Settings\Temp folder

- the EliteToolBar folder in C:\Windows

- The C:\Windows\System32\Error.dat file. if you have it.

NOTE: To avoid the risk of any of the above not being found due to them having the 'Hidden' attribute, show all files as follows:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Now go to Start > Run, and type Cmd then press Enter > The Command window opens

Copy the following line:

DEL /F /Q "%windir%\system32\elitewaw32.exe"

RIGHTclick your mouse in the Command Window. The line you've copied will get pasted into the command window. Subsequently press the ENTER button.

Next, still in Safe Mode, Run hijackthis again with no Windows Apps or Browser windows open, Scan, and checkmark/fix the following lines:
*********************************************

Now Doubleclick Fix.reg you saved earlier, and answer yes when prompted to add its contents to the Registry.

Now run WinsockXPFix
When you run the program, create ReG-Backup onto desktop then click fix. That way, if you lose Internet Connectivity you can restore from that backup to get back online and we can try a different approach.

When you're done, start your computer normally, and post a fresh log.

It doesn't appear that I am getting anywhere. I attempted to run the DEL /F /Q "%windir%\system32\elitewaw32.exe" and it claimed that this was an incorrect request. I attempted several different time and tried simple changes like removing space and caps.

I was also unsure of what to check when I ran the hijack. Did you want me to check everyting that the scan produced?

Next, still in Safe Mode, Run hijackthis again with no Windows Apps or Browser windows open, Scan, and checkmark/fix the following lines:
*********************************************

I am still open to wipe the entire computer and start from scratch, I just don't have the recovery disk.

Your call, you know far beyond me on the best approach. I can repost the log tonight if you like.

Thanks for your time Steve

Steve,

I had some success last night. The ActiveScan ran successfully and I attempted to send it but was refused since it had more than 20000 characters. So here is the log file and I will attempt to send the ActiveScan of the My Computer right after this is submitted. The computer is starting to run a bit better as it is not logging me off for no specific reason.

Steve,

I am unsure how to provide you with the ActiveScan results since it doesn't appear that I can attach a document and it won't allow 20,000 characters. Let me know if you want me to break it up into acceptable size pieces, or I could email it directly to you. It is 96kb in size.

Thanks,

Guy

EDIT

the link is fixed

==========================================================================================================

Take as many boxes as you need for the active scan results

But please do the following also before we can continue.

Please download
LQFix. Extract
the files to a folder. Don't run it yet.

Boot into Safe Mode. Double click LQFix.bat. A DOS window should
open and close, this is normal. Once done, reboot Windows normally and
post a new HijackThis log please.
