ACTIVESHIELD

I hope I am in the right place but I am a complete computer dummy and need help.  I received the following message and don't know what they are talking about.

"Some components of ActiveShield are either missing or might not have been installed properly. Please reinstall ActiveShield"

I hope someone can help me understand what I have to do.

Activeshield is your McAfee antivirus. Check and see if you have the disk for it in your Dell software. Reinstall it.

How old is your Dell? If the McAfee is out of date then it might be worth pursuing other options. I personally prefer Norton NAV 2004 for home consumers and for people on a budget the free AV at www.grisoft.com.

I also recently got a free Windows security CD from Microsoft (see offer here) and it had a second CD with a free one year trial version of E-trust from Computer Associates. Be aware it took 6 weeks to receive this CD, but it is well worth it so everybody click on that link for the free offer.

In any case you need an antivirus program as soon as possible. McAfee support is pretty overwhelmed like most firstline companies so I wouldn't expect much help there.

Cheers,

I don't have McAfee discs. I downloaded when I got the computer, I think because I had a guy from Dell install the computer and everything was on there when he was done.  I have a disc for Dell antivirus, support software, multimedia software and internet software all on one disc. but nothing for McAfee. When I go into programs, click McAfee, I get drop-down with Mcafee Firewall plus, Mcafee Viruscan and McAfee Security Center.  Can I use one of these and, if so, how.l

I do so appreciate your help.

My Dell is not even a year old.  I rec'd the Security CD from MS but didn't use it because I have Mcafee.  I checked my antivirus from McAfee and it registered a 10 which they say is OK and they tell me everyday when they scan for virus'.  That's why I can't understand why I am getting that message.  I will keep the McAfee until it runs out and then see if I want to change. I had the Norton on my old computer and had trouble with it and when I got the free trial with my new computer I just stayed with it.  It should be over in May sometime.

Thank you soooo much for your help

The MS Security CD addresses critical security patches, not to be confused with antivirus programs. Use Windows live Update regularly for newer updates than on the CD.

If I were you I'd email Dell support and ask about the missing CDs for your antivirus. Also check out your system with Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware (both free programs to check and repair scumware). If they find a lot and they probably will, download a copy of Hijackthis and make a log file of your present startup situation to see if you're at danger (place Hijackthis download in a new folder on the C: root level named HJT before running a log).

Post the log file back here or at the antispyware forum at http://forums.tomcoyote.com/index.php or http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/
