On internet live webcast last nite when "Generic Host Process for win32" popped up I clicked send rpt & finished webcast. This am had trouble getting on, slower and seemed to lock up. Then I ran a scan thru Microsoft essentials and it posted removal of Trojan:DOS/Alureon.A  Items:rootkit:AlureonMbr

Still had trouble (ie referral over to advertisements this evening and locked up trouble getting out of programs) so I searched web for how to remove Alureon and did faree TDSSKiller thru Kaspersky.

Anyway to verify that this is actually gone?  I apologize in advance for not being tech savvy - Thanks much for any suggestions.

Hello Cromarlee,

My name is George and I will be assisting you with your problem.

Please follow all my instructions carefully in the order that I give them.

Do not install any updates until I tell you to do so. Updating an infected computer can have disastrous effects.

Do not attempt any other fixes than what I give you here. Using other tools might interfere with the cleaning process. It may also damage your computer.

Either print or save to Notepad all the instructions that I give you. If there is anything you are unsure of or any instructions you feel lack clarity, please do not hesitate to ask.

Some of the logs I may ask for are very long and complex. As is analysing these logs. My responses to you may take longer than you would expect. I assure you that I will work through your problem and a solution as quick as I can.

I am currently an advanced trainee in Malware removal at SpywareHammer Academy. My posts have to be approved by a Mentor before posting, so my responses may take longer than expected; all I ask is that you please be patient.

Did you run TDSSKiller? If so can you please post the latest log for that as well. The location of which will be on your C:\ Drive and will be named. TDSSKiller followed by the date that you run the tool last.

Step 1
ATF Cleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for Windows 98/ME/2K/XP and Vista

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click
  • No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program. For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step 2
Run Malwarebytes

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 3
OTL

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

In your next reply can I have:
    OTL.txt
    Extras.txt
The MBAM log and any issues you may have had.
    TDSS Killer.txt

Hi cromarlee,

Can I ask what problems are still on your computer, the more detailed the quicker I will be able to grasp the situation on your computer.

The TDSSKiller report that you posted was incomplete. Is that all there is in the text document named TDSSKiller.txt. Can you see if there are any more text files on the C:\ Drive, beginning with TDSSKiller, if so can you post them all.

From your logs it is evident that you have run some speciality tools. Can I ask why? One of the tools that I see evident in your logs is Combofix. Combofix is a very advanced tool that should not be used without someone trained in it's use. Combofix is a very powerful tool and can turn your computer into an oversized paperweight if not used correctly.

If you have used combofix, I'd like to see the logfile from that which will be located on the C:\ Drive and named combofix.txt.

Can you also please run TDSSKiller. It has recently been updated to deal with a new variant of a nasty infection.

Step 1
TDSSKiller

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

    • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract its contents to your desktop.
    • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

      TDSSKillermain.png

    • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

      TDSSKillerMal-1.png

    • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

      TDSSKillerSuspicious-1.png

    • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

George,

Hi! In answering your questions my initial problem was the popup error msg of Generic Host Process Win32 and that I started to get the inappropriate advertisement referrals. I ran Microsoft Essentials and it came up with the Alureon A and said it deleted it...I was still having problems with advertisements/programs locking up so thats when I went to TDSS it said it removed it.  I'm still having some advertisements pop up (only a few) and it seems to be running slow so I'm not sure if Alureon has really been removed, or if I have something else; but I can't say that I've noticed anything else going on but I've tried to stay off the internet until I'm sure the system is ok.  I was using McAfee but let it expired because it didn't seem like it was scanning/removing anything and have been relying mainly on Microsoft Essentials.  Don't know how I keep picking up Alureon but any suggestions that might help prevent it in the future would be appreciated - I know it's an old system but I've been out of work and only recently started a part-time job but it comes with very few hours so I simply can't afford to purchase a new computer system at this time.

The Combofix has not been run recently - A little over a year ago I had a problem (several things but I can't remember what they were but think one of them was Alureon.H?) and Combofix was one of the programs you folks at Dell had me go through.) I wasn't aware that I even had it still on the computer.

Any way - since I had such a hard time a year ago getting rid of the spyware/malware I'm a little leary that it's actually been removed so easly this time with just running the TDSS.  Enclosed is the initial TDSS (05.06.11) and the version from today (05.09.11):

Please pardon the intrusion, folks. I just wanted to comment on the ComboFix situation.

The Combofix has not been run recently - A little over a year ago I had a problem (several things but I can't remember what they were but think one of them was Alureon.H?) and Combofix was one of the programs you folks at Dell had me go through.) I wasn't aware that I even had it still on the computer.
  Reference: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/virus-spyware/f/3521/t/19320274.aspx

ComboFix should have been removed by running the CleanUp component of OTL - if those instructions were followed.

Hi Cromarlee,

Thanks for such a detailed response that has helped me a lot to understand your situation. From your logs it looks like Alureon has definitely gone. I would like you to follow the instructions below, after these steps we will see what other issues remain and go from there.

Can I also ask how this computer connects to the internet. Do you use a wireless connection through a router,or, does your computer plug directly into a modem?

Can you explain the nature of the pop-ups you are receiving, are they still inappropriate in content. If not can you give me an example of what they contain.

Okay  now I'm totally confused .  Am I supposed to assume that I did something wrong and didn't follow instructions on 7th May when I ran OTL? Or I screwed something up by not following instructions a year ago?  and exactly how does that now relate with the removal of Alureon A?

Oh please let me know what I didn't do and I will proceed with trying to follow the directions a little better.

Hi Cromarlee,

Don't worry you haven't done anything wrong. With the majority of tools we use to clean your computer, the first scan is a diagnostic one. Most of these tools then have a 2nd stage were a fix can be applied. The fix script I asked you to do previously was the follow up to my initial diagnostic scan with OTL. This script is removing left over items that could help your computer run better.

Now, can I ask that you please read my previous post very carefully and follow all the instuctions within. If there is anything you don't understand please let me know and I will try to assist to make the instructions clearer.

Another thing I'd like to know is how do you connect to the internet. Does your computer connect through a router? Is it wireless or a wired connection. If you don't know, don't worry I can give you instructions that will allow you to tell me.

I know this process can be very daunting but I can assure you we are making good progress

George
