First, you should move the HJT progam from your Desktop:

C:\Documents and Settings\Alan Vennard\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

into a separate folder of its own... We recommend using folder C:\HJT , so that it will then appear in your log under running processes as C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe

if you prefer, it's okay to have an HJT folder on your Desktop, move the HJT program into the HJT folder, and run it from there.

This is important because HJT generates log files, and backup files, in the folder from which it is run. So at present, all these logs/backups will just "clutter-up" your Desktop. And if you simply delete them from there, you'll lose the important backup information, which may be needed in case you have to "undo" [restore] some of the things you "FIX" incorrectly.

I'm not sure what 'removed' it.... it doesn't seem to be VirtumundoBeGone (unless you ran VBG  more than once, and deleted its logs in-between runs)....  but suffice it to say,  'something' removed the bad WinFixer/Vundo file... so have you noticed any difference, in terms of WinFixer popups, warnings about trojan vundo/virtumundo, and/or overall system speed/performance?   Next, i'lll help you with some minor touch-ups: Run HiJackThis.  click on DO A SYSTEM SCAN ONLY. Place a check-mark in the box in front each of the lines:   O20 - Winlogon Notify: mlljj - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mlljj.dll (file missing) O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)   Click on FIX CHECKED. Close HiJackThis. Reboot. ************************** it appears you're running Sun Java j2re1.4.2_03 .   there is much speculation that a 'hole' in this particular version is being exploited by WinFixer.   so we should upgrade to the latest version, 1.5.0_06 from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp my personal preference is to download the MANUAL (OFFline) installation version (16 MB).  but if you prefer the online installation, that choice is yours.   AFTER you successfully install the new java, go to your control panel, ADD/REMOVE programs, and UNinstall all older versions of Java (if any) that still show up there.... especially the 1.4.2_03.   when you're done, REPLY here, and post an updated/revised HJT log.     At that point, I'm gonna try to ask someone else to step-in, to determine additional problems (if any) that you might have. Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option. Log in as your usual login or you won't find the programs you put on the desktop
and some of the entries may not appear we want to remove will not appear in HijackTHis.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix Checked the following:

Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Quicktime. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel. Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult windows installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information. I also get similar messages when tryin to install real player.

We got lucky. It appears that the malware has let itself be removed. Sometimes when it is running and you try and remove it it will reinstall itself.

Not sure why you can't install the two programs. I do see signs of Quicktime trying to run. Make sure that you don't have a partial install by Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and then look for Quicktime.

Perhaps some of your protective services are stopping the installs. Let's make sure you have a clean hosts file. Sometimes malware will make changes so you go to a different site than you think.

Download the Hoster from:

http://www.funkytoad.com/

Unpack to your desktop and run it. If you have green print at the top then just press Restore Original Hosts then OK.
IF you have red print then press make Hosts Writeable first.

Get DelDomain.inf from:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf and then right click on it and Install. Nothing much will happen.

Now redownload the install programs and save them to your desktop. Right click on each and scan for viruses just to make sure.

Now run msconfig (Start, Run, msconfig, OK) and click on the Startup tab. Uncheck the boxes for

AOL Spyware Protection

WinPatrol

Cleaner77

Now go to the Services Tab and check hide Windows Services. Then uncheck the Sysmantec services namely:

Symantec Event Manager (ccEvtMgr)

Symantec Network Proxy (ccProxy) -

Symantec Password Validation (ccPwdSvc) -

Symantec Settings Manager (ccSetMgr) -

ISSvc (ISSVC)

Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service (navapsvc) -

SAVScan - Symantec Corporation -

ScriptBlocking Service (SBService) -

Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) -

Symantec SPBBCSvc (SPBBCSvc)

SymWMI Service (SymWSC) -

OK and Reboot. Try and install the two programs now.

When done go back into msconfig and check Normal Startup then OK and let it reboot.

I carried out the instructions but I am still getting the same error messages with Quicktime.  With Realplayer i get the following message:   You currently do not have administrator access to windows registry. Please see your system administrator to install Realplayer.   I only have the one user account on this computer which has admisistrator access as far as i know!

Again when i try to go into safe mode the screen fills with lines of text sayin somethin like

Boot into Safe Mode and see if it offers you access to the Administrator account. Usually there is no password. IF you don't see the safe mode menu when it gets to the black screen then hit F8 one more time.

The text you refer to normally starts after you select the Safe Mode option from the menu and after you select the operating system .  Just let it run and it should eventually boot into a window with Safe Mode at each corner.   Ron

Hi, i booted into safe mode and it allow me to access the administrator account but the quicktime and realplayer setup files I had on the desktop weren't visible....
