Another hijacking--HJT log files here for analysis

Hello.
I also have the "coolwebsearch" problem that has taken over my machine and hijacked my browser. I ran "Hijack This" and my log files are listed below. Can someone advise me what to remove?

Also, due to my own stupidity, I've spent hours in the past few days "doing stuff" to my machine to try to get this thing off here, and my whole computer is pretty messed up. Someone at Earthlink tech support advised me to remove and reinstall Internet Explorer to solve the problem. I tried to do that through add/remove programs and then add/remove windows components, but it seems that I was only partially successful. The IE icon still appears under my start menu, and directs me to the bogus web site when I click on it, but features of interntet explorer such as shockwave no longer work. I tried to download and install IE 6.1 from the microsoft web site but I get a message saying a newer version of IE already exists on my machine and it can go no further. I also have several error messages popping up when I'm doing random stuff on my machine and when I reboot. I'm wondering if it might not be better to load all my personal files onto CDs and wipe my machine clean and start over? Seriously....

I think we can salvage it without a reformat.

First... in Hijackthis scan, check and fix check all the ActiveX scripts just to give us some clearance room:

Don't have any other programs running when you do the fix check (no IE 6)

It is good to clean out an excessive number of ActiveX scripts. They are easily restored when you visit that URL again and accept the download of the expander or .CAB file.

Now for the tough exploit...CWS random number:

Try Fix 4 on this page: http://russelltexas.com/malware/malware.htm  (which is the tool downloadable below):

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html

You can also work on your IE 6 problem:

http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFAQ.htm#Reinstall

See how you do and post back.

Hi Texruss,

Well, here's what I've done, and run into at this point.

First, I deleted all the 016 ActiveX scripts as you suggested.  No problem there.

Then, I downloaded "Fix 4" (About Buster file ) to my hard drive.  First, though, I went through the steps listed at the download site, as recommended to make the tool work correctly.  This is where I ran into a few problems.  On step 3, the step said to go into safe mode (no problem), right click on my computer/manage/services and applications/services.  It got through to this point.  What was supposed to then be listed on the right hand side was "Network Security Service", which I was supposed to double click on, then choose Stop and write down the name and path of the file in the "Path to Executable" section.  Then I was supposed to set the Startup Type to Disabled and click OK.  I had no listing for "Network Security Service" at all, so I could not complete this step.

For step 4. I went on and removed all the lines (using Hijack This) that related to what comes up on my hijacked page:  res://xohci.dll/index.html#12802

Step 5 said "Delete the dll file that was in the place of the word random; res://dll/index/html#37049  (I wasn't sure what else this meant, other than what I'd just done on step 4)

Step 6 said "Verify there is nothing out of place in your hosts file.  (I had no idea what that meant, so I did a search for files with the word 'hosts' in it.  I got three files back: Hosts (located in C:/I386 which said it couldn't be opened), LMHosts.sam (same location, also said it couldn't be opened), and LMHosts.sa_ (same location, and it did open to reveal 2 lines of gibberish--mostly containing characters and a few letters.)  I didn't do anything at this point.

I then ran the AboutBuster program, and it pulled up all those res://dll files and I deleted them.

I then clicked on my partially working internet explorer button on my start menu.  My page landed on www.google.com (yeah) rather than the bogus one it had been going to.  But, when I clicked on the home icon, it reverted back to the bogus page.  Obviously, I missed a step in there somewhere, because I am back to zero again.

I also attempted the IE fix you suggested.  When I run the fix I get a File Needed dialog box that says "The file 'IEXPLORE.EXE' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1CD is needed.  Type the path where the file is located and click OK."  The path that automatically fills in says C://windows/inf.I386 but when I click on OK, nothing happens--it keeps asking for the path.  My other option is to browse, but I don't know what I'm looking for.  I then tried to reinstall IE again and again, but I keep getting messages saying the installation can't be completed and my system needs to reboot to continue.  Then I reboot, and it tries to finish installation, but never does.  I got one message saying it needed to download additional files, then a message saying "The software you are installing has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with windows XP. The software will not be installed.  Contact your administrator."

What a mess.  I thank you so much for any other advice you can offer at this point.

Sincerely, Kelly and Mike

The correct XP Home CD is nice to have when stuff is messed up. I fixed a PC today with file corruption and my copy of XP Home Edition was NOT SP 1 so it would not take it. I ended up using XP Pro and upgraded to solve the problems. Without a full CD you will always be one tool short.

Post a fresh log and try the fixes again...going backward from 4 to 1. Don't reboot without deleting bad files in Windows Explorer...they will mutate. Tough exploit, but it is not as bad as the temp folder CWS infection from what I have observed.

Hi Texruss,
Sorry about that. By "post a fresh log" I thought you meant to start a new thread. Now I realize you meant rerun and post the HJT files. I'm new to this terminology and a bit overwhelmed--again, I apologize.
Based on your previous message, I did the following:

1) Checked my host file. Although it's located in a different place C:/I386, it looks normal, so I don't think there's a problem there.

2) I ran HJT again, and again deleted all references to res://xohci.dll
Here is the HJT log again...I keep removing the same 6 lines that contain reference to xohci.dll

3) I reran About Buster, and it showed that it removed the following:
-- Scan 1 --------
About:Buster Version 1.27
Removed! : C:\WINDOWS\xohci.dll
Removed! : C:\WINDOWS\zuara.dat
Attempted Clean Of Temp folder.
Removed Uninstall Key (HSA)
Removed Uninstall Key (SE)
Removed Uninstall Key (SW)
Pages Reset... Done!

But, when I went into c://windows through explorerer, those files xohci.dll and zuara.dat were still there, so I manually deleted them, then immediately emptied my recycle bin and rebooted. They were present again after reboot, so I've tried various combinations of running HJT, About Buster, manual deletion, and vice versa. No matter what, after I reboot, HJT finds the malware again, I fix it, About Buster finds them and says they are removed, and I go into c://windows and they are still sitting there. I delete them, open c://windows again, and there they sit! I even ran a search for all files xohci.dll and they only place they showed up was in my recycle bin (which I promptly emptied) but they continue to be present. Obviously, it is set to mutate, but from where?

I'm at my wits end with the amount of hours I've spent trying to fix this. I'm not even worried about Internet Explorer not working right at this point--I'll get to that if I ever get this fixed! I'm about to throw my computer out the window :-)
Thank you,
Kelly and Mike

Texruss,
I will try Fix 5 right now. I do not have a Hosts file where it should be. The only thing there in windows/system32/drivers/etc are 4 files, named respectively Networks, Services, Protocols, and LMHosts. When I ran a search off the start menu, a "Hosts" file came up under c:/windows/I386 and that's the only place it showed up at all.

Even a blind hog finds an acorn in the forest once in a while. *;-)

I have felt pretty blind on this exploit...never had to suggest so many fixes...the CWS guys are very good. But obviously our side is also very good.

Post a new log when you get a chance.

Texruss,
I can't believe it, but Fix #5 did it. It's gone. HJT and About Buster both ran clean and I manually went in and checked as well--the files that kept reappearing are gone. Fingers crossed, this is the end of this mess. I want to thank you so much for your advice this week--we would have been lost without your help. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Texruss,

I went through everything you suggested, and here are my latest HJT files. I see that "svc.hosts" file keeps showing up.  I ran the Trend Micro Housecall product and deleted all the files it found.  Was I supposed to delete all the occurances of the svc.hosts that showed in my task manager as processes?  Directions didn't say to do that, so I didn't...

Maybe this all has to do with the fact that my hosts file isn't where it's supposed to be? Remember, it's only found in c://I386--not in the windows folder where you said it should be.

Otherwise, how do we look? (And does this ever end?)

Thanks again for all your help

If it is spelled correctly it is a valid good file...svchost.exe

The virus writers rename it to scvhost.exe (among other bastardizations in an attempt to fool casual observers.

>Maybe this all has to do with the fact that my hosts file isn't where it's supposed to be? Remember, it's only found in c://I386--not in the windows folder where you said it should be.

No...it was just time...your luck ran out without having the MS patch from last summer...the Blaster worms will roam the Net for years like grey ghosts looking for unpatached machines...they don't hit through email or webpages...they hit through software ports in your Internet pipeline connection. Very weird stuff when it happens...I saw 600 networked machines get infected within ten minutes last August.

But while we are on the topic of HOSTS...download and put a good copy of a protective HOSTS file in the proper folder. Download this file:  http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip

Unzip and move it into C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC folder.

Hit Control-Shift-Escape keys at same time. Click on Processes tab and End Task for the following entries:

atlnb32.exe
dqqbuiie.exe
smproxy.exe

Run Hijackthis, scan and check the box left of these numbered line items:

With no other windows open click on fix checked button in Hijackthis.

Exit Hijackthis.

Reboot to SAFE MODE

Show HIDDEN FILES and folders

These necessary options are explained in FAQ's 8 and 9 on this page:

http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Hit Control-Shift-Escape keys at same time. Click on Processes tab and End Task for the following entries:

atlnb32.exe
dqqbuiie.exe
smproxy.exe

Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:

Navigate down the folder structure in left hand window and then in the right window delete the following files and/or folders: (if present...some may be gone...but look very carefully and make sure you have enabled hidden files option):

C:\WINDOWS\twaintec.dll
C:\WINDOWS\alchem.exe
C:\WINDOWS\kicmh.dk
C:\WINDOWS\apiqk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sdknc32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mslg32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\d3ox32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\soundcontrl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntjr32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntou32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipbi.exe

C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU   folder

Reboot in normal mode Windows and run Disk Cleanup: type cleanmgr at Start/Run. Scan all hard drives and check all categories at the end and click OK.

If you have any problems with Disk Cleanup completing...XP users can fix it here:

 http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/DeleteOldFiles.htm

Next...download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware) at the link below. Use Spybot first.

Most of the Internet baddies can be killed by a one-two punch with Spybot and Adaware assuming these three factors are achieved:

1. Latest version
2. Configured correctly for running options
3. New definitions from update feature

Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.

Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...print out the directions in the custom scan tutorial as a reference while you set these options for the custom setup of Adaware. These custom settings will be retained for future custom scans so don't go nuts thinking you have to do this every time you run it! It may take you five minutes to set them up, but it's worth it.

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Please note the free Spybot 1.3 does have a slight bug...it detects some DSO exploits falsely. Hopefully an upgrade will fix this. The problem is not serious and should not deter people from using Spybot.

Reboot and browse a bit, exit IE 6 and post a new Hijackthis log.

Special Comments: After the final all clear is given by us you should flush your Restore Points for XP. That means disabling the Restore Point, rebooting to flush it, then re-enabling a new Restore Point. The reason why we need to do this is to purge the bad files hidden in System Restore which can't be cleaned by your antivirus programs.

See FAQ 12 here: http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Also...uninstall SurfMonkey unless you like adware.

Texruss,

We tried to give you the weekend off.  Okay--we've installed and run Spywareguard, Spybot S&D, Adaware, a replacement Hosts file, and we bought and installed Norton Internet Security 2004 on Friday night.  Here are the latest HJT files after a regular round of surfing today.

Thank you so much for all your help and advice, Kelly & Mike

Texruss,

Just wanted to say thank you so much, again, for all your help.  It was an unbelievably frustrating week, but you got us through it with your kindness, professionalism, and knowledge.

Deeply in gratitude,

Kelly & Mike
