AntiSpam shows "Refreshing"

I have Norton Internet Security 2005 and up until a few weeks ago had little trouble with it. But now it seems that the AntiSpam portion of it isn't working. When I click the AntiSpam tab, all of the features just say "Refreshing." I can't configure the blocked and allowed lists, or even turn on the product.

Anyone else encounter this?

John,

this the same problem i am having, it started after norton update, after thatupdate my email and

some scripts were being blocked. Dell tech reinstalled norton nis 2005 and it has been reinstalled

a couple of time since and it is still not working. So slow the system scan and virus scan is from

symantec, but they won't help you if you don't do what they say. Ok if you click on turn on antispam

do you get an error code  undeterimed error :res:/c:// a long string til you get to antispam\NASPlug.dll/

nasstatus.htm 1066   some of the others will give 1154,1046,1157.

into my second day of run arounds really getting mad about it!

Yeah, I get the same error messages you described. I've been dealing with this issue for a couple of weeks now. It began right after I did an NIS LiveUpdate. Trying to communicate via email with Symantec's support staff, and getting their robot-like responses, is getting on my nerves. While they are trying to be helpful, they are clearly stumped by this one, yet they adhere to their customer service script without the slightest variance. I've tried all of the suggestions contained in their customer service links, none of which has solved the problem.

And like you, I've uninstalled and reinstalled NIS 2005 a couple of times, but the problem remains. Their last email suggested I reinstall Internet Explorer. I can see where this is going, of course. They will eventually ask me to reformat my hard drive. I've already spent too much time on this issue as it is, and I certainly don't intend to reformat my drive. I'll keep you posted.

John,

How long did it take to get a return on email? i have used the chat, did send an email detailing

problem this morning, have not heard back yet? i could not delete/uninstall all the files. this looks

like it can cause trouble. Not worth reformatting the hard drive or re-installing other programs.

Let them fix their software, not mess up other programs.

I have the same problem with Antispam showing "Refreshing" also.  Here are some links to other people in forums who have the same problem as well...

Thus far, there is no fix that I can find.  After speaking with Symantec support a few times, they have no clue.  Talking to them is worthless!  Obviously, this is not just a random error because many people are having the same issue.  At least the NIS Antivirus still works.  Anyway, I would not reformat you harddrive because I doubt the problem will go away.  I believe it is a Symantec software compatibility problem that only they can fix.

Well, I have not heard back from email. I have uninstalled norton nis, installed AVG grisoft, switched

to Mozilla/firefox with ad blocking, my dell tech rep suggested that, cause it is not intergrated with

windows the same way it blocks some of the problems, and added Spybot.  I cannot believe how

much faster webpages load(after adding ad blocker addresses) ebay pages load in a second, yahoo

less than that, with no moving ads, text and pics load fast!  I have no complaints about the computer!

Just takes sometime to learn new software (video) old system is running win98.

Good luck guys!

I did a Google search and found messages from other people who are having this same problem. Unfortunately, it seems that Symantec's tech support has made zero progress in coming up with a solution to this issue. Therfore, I have solved it myself. I uninstalled NIS 2005 and installed the 15-day free trial of Zone Alarm. So far, so good. If it continues to work as I expect, I'll purchase it. Otherwise, I'll try something else.

Three days ago, Symantec tech support ceased their e-mail communications with me. When it became apparent that they were unable to offer a solution to the constant "Refreshing" problem, I politley requested that they send me a free copy of NIS 2006 to see if that would solve the problem.

I haven't heard from them since.

As I mentioned to another poster, I've recently started using Zone Alarm, and so far it seems fine. And it blocks spam, stops popups, and eliminates most of the idiotic banner ads that have infected most Web pages.

My suggestion is to not waste any more time in trying to debug NIS 2005. The best solution is to find another Internet security product and use it. Symantec's tech support people were as clueless as they were polite.

I discovered this same issue the other day while using Nero, which I recently installed.   Nero was unable to connect to the internet for updates.  I went to the Blocked & Allowed sections of the Anti-Spam portion and realized the problem you have described.  I also have done everything Norton suggested with the same results, short of completely removing all registry information with regards to Norton.   I have spent two nights after work messing with this, I have other things to do!   Let me know if anyone finds a solution and I will do the same.  Thanks.

"I have spent two nights after work messing with this, I have other things to do!   Let me know if anyone finds a solution and I will do the same."

I did find a solution. I uninstalled NIS 2005 and installed Zone Alarm Security Suite. I like it and have had no problems with it.

Symantec's customer support is about the the worst I've ever experienced. They are polite but clueless. You are wasting your time with them. They have no idea how to resolve this "Refreshing" problem with the AntiSpam portion of the software, and they have no idea what is even causing the issue. My advice is to find another security product and give it a try. Most of them have free trial periods like Zone Alarm does (it's 15 days). I downloaded it from their website (www.zonelabs.com).

Good luck.

I have just encountered the same problem that you are all describing and have taken the same steps to resolve it with no success. I noticed that you all had this problem some time ago, and I was wondering if you knew of any solution to it yet, or if symantec ever got back to you?

Cheers.

I did find a solution that worked for me. I uninstalled NIS 2005 and went with Zone Alarm. That solved my problem. However, be advised that the most recent version of Zone Alarm has some problems of its own. I am running a -1 version, so I'm not affected by those issues.

I advise replacing NIS with another security product. There are many on the market, and most have a 30-day trial period. Just go to one of the vendor's websites, download the trial version, and give it a try.

I decided to try another product for several reasons. First, Symantec's customer support is horrible and has difficulty communicating in a way that lends itself to solving problems (they merely parrot a script, which generally doesn't address the real issue you're having). Also, to the best of my knowledge, the "Refreshing" problem has yet to be resolved. At the time I uninstalled NIS 2005, there was no solution that the company could provide. And unlike Symantec, Zone Alarm does have a great user forum with lots of very knowledgeable posters, something Symantec doesn't have. Go to www.zonelabs.com.

I don't get into love affairs with software, particularly security software. If a product doesn't work for me, I'll make reasonable attempts to get the matter resolved, but when it becomes apparent that the issue is beyond the abilities of tech support and customer support to understnad and solve, I'll move on and try something else. I'm not about to spend weeks of my time trying to debug their products for them.

Don't spend too much time trying to solve the "Refreshing" issue for Symantec. Just go with another product.

Thanks for your reply, think I will do as you suggest and go with another product. I might also try AVG as I've heard that's good.
