You are running a vulnerable version of Internet Explorer. When bamajim finished your last topic he recommended that you get your Microsoft updates. If you keep IE6 you are going to have problems.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE.

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a partial list HERE.    

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. It is understood by the trained analysts that once a helper replies to a log, he continues working with you until the issue is resolved.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any additional online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.scr
  • DDS.pif
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
• Click Yes at the prompt for Optional Scan.
• When done, DDS will open two (2) logs

• 1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

• Save both reports to your desktop.
• Copy/paste both logs to your reply on the forum.
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

• Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

 i am having trouble, i dont have enough time to work before the virus takes over my computer. i only have about 60 to 90 seconds before the virus locks up my computer and i have to shut it down. i was able to download the dds to my desktop but  i dont have enough time to run it. i double click the icon, the explination screen pops up, then dots start appearing in a line under the words. the farthest i've gotten is 12 sets of dots, i havent been able to even get to the "yes" prompt. i've tried it 10 times, all with the same results. should i continue trying or do you have another option? if you suggest a different method, should i delete dds and enable avast before trying anything else? thank you so much for your help.      -brandy 

Please run the following to see if it will temporarily disable the malware. It is important to follow these iinstructions carefully, or this will not work. Please use another computer to print them if possible, or write them down. If the malware won't let you download Rkill, you may need to download on a clean computer, save to a CD or USB stick, and transfer the program to the infected computer.

1. Please download Rkill by Grinler from here Rkill and save it to your desktop.  If that does not work try this alternate Link

• Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Security Tool and other Rogue programs.
• If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
• Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that rkill is an infection, please ignore it, and run rkill.com again. This message is just a fake warning given by the malware when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it.
  Therefore, please run rkill quite a few times until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the instructions below.
  Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.
  
  2. Now you should download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:

  3. Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one.
  
  4. Double-click on the icon on your desktop named mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of MBAM onto your computer.
  
  5. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing and is at the last screen, make sure you uncheck both of the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware check boxes. Then click on the Finish button. If Malwarebytes' prompts you to reboot, please do not do so.
  
  6. As this infection deletes a core executable of Malwarebytes' we will need to download a new copy of it and put it in the C:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ folder. To download the file please click on the following link:

  When your browser prompts you where to save it to, please save it to the C:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ folder. When downloading the file, it will have a random filename. Please leave the filename the way it is as it is important that it is not changed. You may want to write down the name of the file as you will need to know the name in the next step.
  
  7. Once the file has been downloaded, open the C:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ folder and double-click on the file you downloaded in step 8. MBAM will now start and you will be at the main program screen.
  
  8. Before you can perform a scan, you must first update the program. To do this click on the Update tab, and that at the new screen click on the Check for Updates button. Malwarebytes' will now check for new updates and download and install them as necessary. When the update is completed, you will be prompted with a message stating either that you already have the latest updates or that they have been updated. Either way, you should now click on the OK button to continue.
  
  9. Now click on the Scanner tab and make sure the the Perform full scan option is selected. Then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer for Security Tool related files.
  
  10. MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so we suggest you go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan.
  When the scan is finished a message box will appear.
  
  11. You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the malware removal removal process.
  
  12. You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.
  
  13. A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown.
  
  14. When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.
  
  15. Please post that log in your next reply here.
  
  16. You can now exit the MBAM program.
  
  * Due to the fact that this infection deletes certain MalwareBytes' files, and we had to work around this, if you wish to continue using MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, which we suggest you do, then you should uninstall and then install it again so that the files are created properly.

rkill worked, it gave me time to work. i had problems with malwarebytes. i downloaded the program and extra file to a stick using a working computer,and i was able to download them to the infected computer. when i tried to open both of them i got an error message. i already had malwarebytes on the infected computer before it got infected, so i tried running that one. i got an error message when i tried to update it (last updated 1-07-10), but it let me do a full scan and produced a log.  should i try the process again?  on a side note, the whole time i was scanning, the dds would pop up and run on its own every 5 minutes. i could not save the log because it would disappear after about 3 seconds.    -brandy

i'm still having trouble with the update for malwarebytes. i've tried a couple different ways and still get an error message. i even deleted it from the infected computer and the usb stick and started the whole process over again. i'm able to install malwarebytes and the update on  the infected computer, but when i try to run malwarebytes i get "error message 703". i deleted and reinstalled it without the update, i ran it, but it didn't find anything. here is the log anyway, along with a new hijack log. also i deleted dds and now  i get a virus warning from avast. it says- file name: c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys   malware name: win32:alureon-EU  malware type: virus/worm. is this part of the virus, should i delete it?   -brandy

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:





Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log for further review.

 

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.

4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.

5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

hello,

i got 2 error messages when i ran combofix. after i clicked yes to install the recovery console , the first message said "failed to download files.." before i could click anything another error message said "presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot". i clicked okay since that was the only option that popped up, after that it ran fine. here are the new logs.  -brandy

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.
Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

• Viewpoint
• Viewpoint Manager
• Viewpoint Media Player
• Viewpoint Toolbar
• Viewpoint Experience Technology

Then remove the Viewpoint folder in your Program Files.

Download and scan each user profile with CCleaner (a good utility to keep and use regularly.):

** Because CCleaner removes everything in temp folders, if you have anything saved in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner.

** We will be cleaning cookies as well. Make a note of any passwords, etc. that you want to save. If you do not want to delete cookies, simply uncheck that option.

1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

2. Then select the items you wish to clean up. In the Windows Tab:

• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose. In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

3. Click the "Analyze" button. When the list of files comes up, click the "Run Cleaner" button.

4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.

5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.

6. Click "exit" when done. REBOOT.

Please run a new scan with HijackThis, so that you can post the new log in your next reply.

Also open HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Select a place to save it. The list should open in notepad.
Copy and paste that list here with your HijackThis log, and let me know how things are running.

According to that list, it appears that we will need to update Java before you go. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
• Scroll down to where it says Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 18 .
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• NOTE: As always during installations, beware of any pre-checked option to install a toolbar. If you do not want it, UNcheck it.
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.
  Close Add/Remove.
  
• 
  * In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java =this folder. Delete any subfolders.
  * Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\ JavaVM =this folder, if found!
  
  
  
  
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.

To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

* Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Java-->Advanced-->Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.

* Click Ok and reboot your computer.

It's time for some housekeeping. Because the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, along with the folders created by these tools.

If RKill is still on your Desktop, please delete that.

Now for the removal of ComboFix:

* Click Start then Run
Copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and / Then hit enter.

This will remove ComboFix, run some cleanup procedures, and flush System Restore, thus creating a clean Restore Point.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

If you have used Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as part of your cleaning procedures, keep it updated and use it to scan every so often for malware, or upgrade to the paid version for realtime scanning and auto updating.

The following suggestions are general prevention and are not customized for your computer. You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:

1. Visit Microsoft Update: Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system, Office, and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS from Microsoft Update at update.microsoft.com. More info HERE.

2. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.

3.You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.

4. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.

5. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the following Rogue/Suspect Spyware Lists. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm http://www.malwarebytes.org/database.php

6. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/ ** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.

7. Web Of Trust , uses colored alerts to warn about risky websites warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:

• Red for Warning = STOP
• Yellow for Use Caution
• Green for Safe
• Grey for Unknown

There is a Web Of Trust version for Firefox as well.

8. You might consider installing SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It will:
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

Periodically check for updates

9. You might want to install Winpatrol. Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.
