AV security suite Trojan- additional virus suspected, location unknown.

I realized i had a trojan 2 days ago. I think i have it removed. I know enough to get by on computers if i have the right tools, i can get through processes.

I followed the instructions i found online for removal of the AV security trojan. I installed McAfee for additional security. I ran the scan for McAfee it told me it had 5 issues, 4 resolved, 1 could not be completed removed. I restarted my system, ran McAfee again, that one did not appear again.

A friend told me that i may still have a virus because my clock is displaying military time. I generally don't have it in military time.

I am not sure what to do from here. I have downloaded Hijackthis and below is the report it generated yesterday. I have since ran McAfee and it says there are no issues.

I would appreciate any and all assistance I can get.

I am running a Dell Optiplex w/Windows XP

If i am in need of any further information, i would be more than happy to provide what is necessary to help get this taken care of.

Thanks for you time.

D~

Welcome to Dell Community :emotion-1:

It appears that you still have some infection in there.

I installed McAfee for additional security.
What were you using before that? Which instructions for removal of the AV security trojan did you follow? McAfee interferes with removal of some malware removal tools, so if I know what steps you took, that will help me to know what we have to do next.

I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE.

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a partial list HERE.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. It is understood by the trained analysts that once a helper replies to a log, he continues working with you until the issue is resolved.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any additional online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

I look forward to your reply so we can begin cleaning.

No Reply within 3 days will result in this topic being closed, and I will remove it from my subscriptions. If you require more time, please let me know.

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

Hello. Thank you for replying. I look forward to getting this taken care of.

I did post the findings of hijack this to a link that a friend of mine gave me for analysis.

Hijackthis.deSecurity is where it was analyzied/

From that analysis it gave me a report of things that i should take out. I printed them out and did what i was instructed to do.

I removed the items that were dangerous or un necessary.

I have also since removed the ad-aware that my friend instructed me to install and i double check to be sure that limewire was out.

Before i had McAfee I had CA Security Suite. It is a program that is offered through my internet provider for customers. Which i have also since, uninstalled.

Is there something that would work better than McAfee? The subscription is new and i can cancel and install something else if need be.

Would it be necessary for me to run the highjackthis report again since i have made changes?

I apologize for not waiting for you assistance, this is all new to me and i was a bit nervous about getting it all taken care of.

I appreciate you assistance. I look forward to getting this taken care of.

The site that you went to uses an automated scanner. Those are notorious for false positives and omissions.  If you need a help site in the future it would be safer for you and your friend to use one listed by Trend Micro here: http://hjt-data.trendmicro.com/hjt/analyzethis/index.php

If you have paid for McAfee keep it. When the subscription runs out, we can recommend several very good free anti-virus/anti-malware scanners.

I hope by using the automated analyzer that you did not remove a registry entry that was needed. It appears from your current log, that there were some incomplete removals.

Let's run a scan with MBAM.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

On the Scanner tab:

  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.
It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:

  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report along with any other requested logs into your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.

**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE

We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • Click Yes at the prompt for Optional Scan.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs

1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Copy/paste both logs  along with your MBAM log to your reply on the forum.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

I have perfomed the things you told me to do. One question before I copy and paste the information. Is there a better program out there than McAfee, that won't cost me $140.00 for 3 yrs of protection? I have 30 days to cancel my subscription. I only got that because i thought that was the best i could get and i would have to pay that price.

AS far as the reports.
here they are.

Malwarebytes did a good job. You can delete the notepad report from your desktop because the program saves a copy in its logs. I suggest keeping MBAM's desktop icon along with the program on your computer and keeping it updated (via the update tab in the program). It would be good to run an on-demand scan every so often, or upgrading to the paid version that autoupdates and has realtime scanning, but we can talk about that later.

As far as McAfee, there are several good FREE anti-virus programs to choose from. I have not been pleased with ISP-provided security.  I use FREE Microsoft Security Essentials.  If you decide to remove McAfee let me know so that we can use the prescribed removal procedure and run the removal tool. Add/Remove Programs may not remove all of it.  Free versions of Avast and Avira are also good. I will leave the decision up to you, but if you install another we'll need to get McAfee removed first or they will conflict.

It also appears that there was an incomplete removal of CA Security Suite. Please see these instructions for running the removal tool for the 2009 version: https://remoteassist.ca.com/supportbridge/jsp/selfserve/processScriptRequestOwnWindow.jsp?divisionID=7&scriptID=259

If you had the  2007/ 2008 version, those instructions are here: http://homeofficekb.ca.com/CIDocument.asp?KDId=3125&Preview=0&Return=0&GUID=DF325E0AA0AB4264AF47E4BEA49F571B

After you remove CA, we will continue by updating your Java. Let me know what you want to do about McAfee and please let me know how things are running.

AS far as McAfee goes, if there are good programs out there that are trustworthy, i would rather use them. I really don't want to spend the money if i don't have to.

What do i need to do to take that out completely?

I ran the link that you have above for CA to remove that.

I have to re-boot right now so i will be back later to see what my next step is.

Thanks again!

Those items on your Desktop, are in case you lost your internet connection. Leave them there until we are completely finished.

To uninstall your McAfee consumer products using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel:

First, go to the McAfee Security Center (via the icon in your system tray) to DISABLE each of the individual McAfee components that you plan on removing (In your case that would be all of them.)

Next, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove components of McAfee Security Center.

   1. Download the removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

   2. Click Save and save the file to any folder on your computer.
   3. Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
   4. Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
   5. Double-click MCPR.EXE to run the removal tool.

   6. Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.

Don't forget to  notify McAfee that you removed the program and that you want a refund (or whatever the arrangement was). If the message Cleanup Unsuccessful is displayed, you can view and save your MCPR log files for analysis by McAfee Technical Support.

Following McAfee removal, go directly to Microsoft and download Microsoft Security Essentials (no extra surfing without anti-virus!). After you save the Setup file,  install it. It may take a few minutes after being installed to download updates. Be patient.

** NOTE: There is a video on Microsoft's download page. You may want to view it beforehand to help you become familiar with what you need to do.

After all that, let me know how things are running. We'll need to update Java and flush System Restore if all is well.

If your daughter has the same McAfee and you want to remove hers, yes, you can follow the same instructions. Microsoft Security Essentials is compatible with Windows XP and higher.

Did you intentionally install the Ask Toolbar? http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/94/Ask-Toolbar.html

If you don't want it, remove it using Add/Remove Programs.

Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile: Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup" Please make sure only the following are checked:

-- Downloaded Program Files

-- Temporary Internet Files

-- Recycle Bin

-- Temporary Files

Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 21  to your Desktop.
  • You will find it here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4648
  • Click the "Download" button. Make sure you do not by accident download any of the other programs advertised on that page.
  • Do not install it yet.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.
    Close Add/Remove.

* In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java =this folder. Delete any subfolders.
* Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\ JavaVM =this folder, if found!
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version. NOTE: As always during installations, beware of any pre-checked option to install a toolbar. If you do not want it, UNcheck it.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.

To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

* Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Java-->Advanced-->Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.

* Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Please delete DDS and its logs if you have not done so already.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log for final review. If everything looks good, we'll flush System Restore and you'll be good to go.

I will un install the McAfee then from her system as well. It has the same thing on hers. Then I will install the Microsoft Essentials on hers too.

I am assuming that the Microsoft Essentials is my virus protection, Correct? One question, when I started my system up this morning, It tells me that i don't have my firewall on. Should that be on?

Another question, what is JAVA? I am not sure what it does.

The ask tool bar is associated with Limewire. I will un install that as well. I don't want that in here either.

When i tried to uninstall the ask tool bar (assoc. w/limewire) i rec'd an error message.

It said:

Error 1905. Module C:\Program\Files\Ask.com\
GenericAskTookbar.dll failed to unregister.

JRESULT-2147220472. Contact your support personnel.

However, it is not listed in my programs any longer.

I went to download that Java. This is the link i was directed to, is that correct? It didn't look right.

http://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/VerifyItem-Start/jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe?BundledLineItemUUID=8MyJ_hCxGwwAAAEpj_Bp_bI3&OrderID=KuSJ_hCx7rcAAAEpg_Bp_bI3&ProductID=CNOJ_hCw7_IAAAEpm65t6GsN&FileName=/jre-6

I wasnt' sure where/what to do from here.

Yes MSE is your anti-virus. Please go to the Control Panal via Start >Control Panel. Go to the Security Center and turn on the Windows Firewall. McAfee disabled it and did not enable it when you removed McAfee. Do the same with your daughter's.
It would be good to check under while in the Security Center to make sure Automatic Updates is on as well. Your MSE will update automatically, too.

Delete this folder IF it is still in your Program Files:
C:\Program\Files\Ask.com <-- Ask folder

Here is some information to answer your Java question: http://www.java.com/en/download/whatis_java.jsp

You should have removed all of these along with their folders per instructions above.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java Auto Updater
Java(TM) 6 Update 18
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) 6 Update 18
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

That installer message usually means a previous installation of a software is getting in the way of the new installation.
Use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to uninstall the failed Java installation.
  Instructions are here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/uninstall_java.xml

Then try running the offline installation for JRE 6.0 update 21 again.

Let me know how that goes.
