Computer Slow -- Help Needed!!!

Hi,
I have been have a problem with the computer slowing down to the point of all programs open slowly and even working in the programs is really slow.  Opening up the internet and browsing is also slow.  I have so far done the following:  Ran a virus scan (McAfee), did two spyware scans with different software (SuperAntispyware & Spybot Search & Destroy), disk clean-up, checked disk for errors, and a defragment.  I have been in contact with Dell tech and was suggested to do a diagnostic, but prior to that I have been suggested to post a Hijack Log here.  Any assistance would be great.  Please note that this is my Inspiron Laptop and still has over half of the memory used.  Also, I have alot of things on startup and am unsure of which to get rid of and I'm sure some are pure memory hogs.
Thanks,
Kelly

Hello Kelly,

There really isn't a lot going on with your log. This is good news since it tells us that the problems you're having her most likely not malware related.

For a wealth of information regarding what is on your computer, what needs to be running, and what doesn't -- dependent on what you use your computer for, copy/paste the following bold text into your browser address bar:

http://www.blzckviper.com

Next, let's take care of a few minor things going on in your HijackThis log:

First, go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MyWebSearch

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

Run HiJackThis and click " o a system scan only ", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/menusearch.jhtml?p=ZCxdm238YYCA

The following are considered optional fixes. They are either programs which can be launched manually when needed, or are known resource hogs. Personally, I would check them all for removal. This may help improve overall system performance.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 11b] C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Graphics 12\Languages\EN\Programs\Registration.exe /title="CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 12" /date=012706 serial=DR12WTX-9999998-YSP lang=EN
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

In your next reply, please include a fresh HijackThis log file, and let me know if you're noticing any difference in system performance. We'll proceed from there. :smileyhappy:

Hi,
Thanks for the input, I printed out your instructions before doing anything.  I tried to go to that website but it showed that there were no results for that site.  Could you check and see if maybe I am missing a letter for the address.
I went to Add/Remove Programs and did not find MyWebSearch.  I ran HiJackThis and did a system scan only and clicked off all those items that you listed. (I was thinking that something may be hogging the memory which may have been causing some slowing down of the computer.)
Below is my new log after the Fix checked and new scan.
Thanks and I'll post if I see a difference.

Hi Kelly,

First off, had I spelled the name of that web site correctly, I'm sure it would have worked better. LOL. Let's try this link: Black Viper. If the link doesn't work properly, copy/paste the following into your browser's address bar:

http://www.blackviper.com (As you can see, I z'd where I should have a'd.)

After you are finished with Black Viper, if you still don't notice any improvement in system performance, please do the following:

Please run Deckard's System Scanner (Thanks Susan528 for the canned.)

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open --> main.txt this one will be maximized and -->extra.txtthis one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt into your next reply.
This will let us know everything that's running on your machine as well as what your memory load is. It may be that you need to install more RAM. Especially if you use a lot of memory intensive programs. We'll see where that takes us. :smileyhappy:

Hi Kelly,

Were you able to link to Black Viper this time? Always helps when things are spelled correctly, huh? Don't worry about the delay in response. This he seems to be the primary description for pretty much everyone these days -- including me. ;D

Thanks for the scanner logs. I'll look them over for anything odd and get back to you as soon as I can.

Hope you're having a great weekend. :smileyhappy:

Hi,

I thought I'd update you on my computer situation.  I have contacted McAfee since my last post and informed them that everytime I went to do a scan it was taking forever and they walked me through fixing a few things.  I was able to do a scan, but it did take hours.  It found two trojans which were removed/quarantined.
I then noticed that on my CPU usage that a file called sprvnt.exe was basically using all of my CPU usage apprx. 98% most of the time.  I checked to see what it was and notice it was from something called SafeNet Sentinal which I don't recall installing.  I found out it was for spyware and adware and since I now have McAfee, Spybot Search & Destroy and SuperAnti-Spyware that I didn't need it anymore.
That has really freed up my CPU usage to a huge amount.
Could this been the actual cause of all my slowed down on my computer?
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Kelly,

Okay, quick question. The file that you discovered was causing so much CPU usage. Was it sprvnt.exe or spnsrvnt.exe? A Google search for the first returned absolutely no information whereas the second appears to be a legitimate file. However, if you didn't install the associated program (SafeNet Sentinel), could be an indication of some hidden malware.

So let's do the following:

First, Click
Start=>Search.
In the search box enter "sprvnt.exe" or "spnsrvnt.exe" (whichever is the correct spelling of the process that you see in task manager), without the quotes.
Write down the full path and filename.

Next, please download File Submitter by Grinler. Save it somewhere convenient, such as the root drive. Example: (C:\submitter.exe).

Create a right-click option:
  1. Navigate to this folder in Windows Explorer: C:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo
  2. Right-click inside the folder window (anywhere).
  3. Slect New=>Shortcut.
  4. Enter the location of the item: C:\submitter.exe
  5. Name the shortcut: Submit Malware
  6. Select Finish.

Configure the tool:
  • Navigate to the tool in Windows Explorer: C:\submitter.exe
  • Double-click the file to open it.
  • Put a check in these boxes:

  • Jotti
  • VirusTotal
  • Advanced
  • BleepingComputer.com

  • Click Save.
  • Click OK in the confirmation window.
  • Cick Exit to close the tool.
Upload Samples:
  1. Locate this file(s) in Windows Explorer:

  2. Full path and filename you wrote down previously

  3. For each file you want to submit:
  4. Right-click file.
    Select Send To=> Submit Malware.
  5. Copy/paste the results of the scans into your next reply.
  6. You should have two results for each file scanned.
By the way, this is a handy little tool for checking on the status of any suspicious looking file -- especially if you can't find any other information about it.

Yes, it certainly is possible that this file has been your problem from the start. The important thing is that we find out exactly what this is and where he came from. We can then act accordingly. :smileyhappy:

Hi,

First let me say sorry for not posting back sooner.  Yes, I did spell that file incorrectly and yours was correct.  I followed your instructions and saw that I did already totally remove this file when I noticed it was not really relevant to any other programs on my computer other than to slow everything down.
I am happy to report that I have gotten my computer back to almost 100% in speed and performance.  I am now setting all my scanning to run every week so that I can make sure there isn't anything there.  Also, I am being very careful of what I download and what is coming with the downloads.
I will have my new notebook come July and my DH can have this one.
Now that I have my computer up and running my other embroidery machine has been acting up and had to go in for repairs, and I am now backed up with all the work I have to catch up on and get out to my customers.
Again, thank you for all of your great help.  Love your clear and concise instructions (learned to print them out as I go through them).
Have a great weekend.
Kelly

Hi Kelly,

You're very welcome. I'm glad I could be of help. :D

Following is my standard "all clean" speech. It contains some final cleanup instructions as well as tips on how to keep your computer free for malware.
If everything is running ok, let's do the final cleanup...

1. Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

2. If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV
( MWAV), run it again - but don't scan, just click " Clear Log" and exit the program.

3. Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.

***Colored items*** available in Internet Explorer only
  • Read and place a check mark next to-"Yes, I accept the terms of use".
  • Place a check mark next to-"I want to select a different Housecall Kernel".
  • Click Launch HouseCall.

  • Select:
  • Using Java-Based Housecall Kernel
  • Click Starting HouseCall.
  • ****Or****
  • "Browser plug-in" Installing and using the Housecall Kernel
  • Click Starting HouseCall (Allow ActiveX install)

  • Choose:
  • "Scan complete computer for malware, greyware and vulnerabilities".
  • Click Next.
  • ****Or****
  • "Scan individuals selected folders only".
  • Click Select.
  • Select folders to scan.
  • Click Next.

  • Please be patient, the scan can take a while.
  • When the scan is finished, a summary page will open.
  • Under Cleanup options.

  • Choose:
  • Clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click Clean now >> .

  • If malware was found, you may be prompted to run the scan again
  • You can just close the browser window.
  • Please write down the full path and filename of anything that could not be cleaned/deleted.
4. Disable, then reenable System Restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system restore point manually.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster => SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard => SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware => If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad => IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file => The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar => Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Use a Firewall => I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. For an excellent article on Firewalls, why you should use one and a some of those available, see Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls. I recommend ZoneAlarm or Sunbelts Kerio. ZoneAlarm is more user-friendly, but Sunbelts Kerio is considered more secure.
  • UPDATE!-UPDATE!-UPDATE! => This is, without a doubt, THE MOST IMPORTANT element in keeping your computer free of malware. Keep each and every one of your anti-malware tools AND Windows up-to-date with all current definitions and patches.
I also suggest that you delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself), for example:
  • C:\WINDOWS\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\--->Everything After the \.
  • Repeat for all users.
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files and cookies:
  • Click Start=>Control Panel=>Internet options.
  • Under the Generaltab.
  • Click Delete Files button.
  • Place a check-mark in Delete all off-line content.
  • Click OK
  • Click Delete Cookies
  • Click OK=>OK
  • Exit Control Panel
  • Repeat for all users.
In Firefox:
  • Click Tools=>Options=>Privacy icon.
  • Click Cache tab.
  • Click Clear Cache button.
  • Click Cookies tab.
  • Click Clear Cookies Now button.
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for all users.
Empty the recycle bin:
  • Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
  • Select "Empty Recycle Bin".
  • Repeat forall users.
Note: You can also do the above steps using a program such as CCleaner.
PLEASE NOTE: The above steps should be done on a regular basis.

Also, please see: So how did I get infected in the first place?
