Dell tech support scam

Yesterday I got a call from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as jack and told me he was from a company contracted by dell to provide software support sand that he had received reports from my computer that the was malware on it and my files were at risk. The call followed the same routine described by others and he asked me to use the run box to show me the problems.

He had my phone number, email and service tag but I was suspicious from the start and when he asked me to run www.remcontrol....... I told him I wanted to confirm his credentials before continuing.

He gave me a phone number which I called and the guy who answered gave me the same story but did nothing to confirm their authenticity.

After this I hung up and did not answer the two subsequent calls. It seems to me that dell has had a security breach that has put customers information in the hands of scammers.

Does anyone have any other info regarding this scam?

I received a similar phone call as well.  However, they are remarkably persistent.  I have auto-rejected the call multiple times and they keep calling back.  Also, the caller seemed to know that the subject computer was a laptop, so I concur that there seems to be some leak of customer info.

Steveloz, thank you for posting this question!

I just read through most of this thread after finding it through a general internet search. This thread is one of many related reports of Dell data breaches of our personal information. I initiated my search after receiving a call very similar to the other reports in this thread. Fortunately, I too had the good sense to recognize this for what it is....a fraudulent scam!

.What I can't find is what action Dell is taking to prevent the mining of our personal information. They don't even admit the breach is of  their origin. Dell seems to be more interested in protecting their own reputation than our personal information. Same on you Dell!!!

I, for one, will never buy another Dell product. I urge anyone else reading this to do the same, as this is one of the most powerful tools we have to register our feelings about Dell's uncaring attitude.

Dell! What are you doing about the continued leaks of our personal information?

I have had several calls like this over the last few weeks. I just tell them they are a scam, say "shame on you" and hang up on them. I even had one guy try to argue with me that he wasn't a scam as I was in the process of hanging up. Everytime I get one of these calls, and each one seems to come from a different number, I just add them to my contacts list then set it to go immediately to voicemail. I call the contact Hangup1, Hangup2, etc., as I get so many similar calls like these that I have to have multiple contacts. I wonder how successful they are. They must be, if they keep doing it. Scary thought.

When we got a scam call from someone claiming to be from DELL who had serial number, case number, knew that we had concierge service, and other sensitive information, I called the actual DELL and was told by the first person I spoke with that there was nothing he could do. This was alarming.

I called back and was able to report the scam call but it does seem that something is very wrong and that DELL customer information has been and continues to be breached.

I would hope that DELL customer care would take these situations seriously. I called today to report that initial customer service person I spoke with said there was nothing he could do. I was told I could not make this complaint, that there was no way to make such a complaint. When I asked to speak with a supervisor, the person said she was going to hang up. She eventually said she would go ahead and make the complaint and would send me an email confirming this which hasn't arrived.

I am now very alarmed that not only has there been a breach of DELL customer's sensitive information, but that DELL is doing nothing to prevent this, and when customers call to report, the DELL employees refuse to help.

Please continue to make these posts to call attention to this and insist that DELL get to the bottom of what appears to be a serious breach, and, when these scams do happen, that DELL immediately report the scam and help the customer protect themselves.
