DeskAdServ and DeskAdKeep

I have these two programs on my computer.  They automatically installed themselves and none of my virus software or spyware/adware catches them.  When I try to manually delete them it gives me an Access Denied screen.  If you could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.  Below is a log of my computer:

Let's see what we can do...


Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click " Free Online Scan".
2. Click " Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) " Auto Clean".
3. Click " Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.


Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

Desk Ad Service
DeskAdServ
Search Relavency

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.


Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click " Config..."
2. Click " Misc Tools"
3. Click " Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hukoqmi.exe
C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service\DeskAdServ.exe
C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service\DeskAdKeep.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.


Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u SEARCH~2.DLL

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.



Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

I ran the Housecall program and it found 6 infected files that are not cleanable:

Try rebooting into "Safe Mode", then running " Disk Cleanup" and allowing it to remove everything it finds; especially temporary files.
 
Reboot normally, then disable system restore and run HouseCall again, when it's done, re-enable sytem restore. The only way to remove viruses/trojans in the system restore folder is to first, turn it off, run your anti-virus software, then turn it back on.

Just some additional info on deskAsserve from the tasklist site

 Nightmarish adware which has appeared on the scene in January 2005.  This program is responsible for endless popup and popunder advertisements and a slow Internet connection.  At the time of writing, 8‑Jan‑2005, we do not know much more about it except that it is most definitely picked up through file sharing activities, particularly if using KaZaA.  In all cases that we have seen thus far the PC is also infected with other adware, spyware, and, worse, viruses.

Recommendation :  
Get rid of this pest as follows :

1)  Restart your PC into Safe Mode by pressing  F8  continually after turning your PC ON till you get a menu where  “Safe Mode”  is one of the options  (you  must  start your PC in Safe Mode as you will not be able to remove this program in any other way).

2)  Go to  “Add/Remove Programs”  in the Control Panel and see if there is a  “DeskAd ....”  entry.  If there is, remove it.

3)  Go to the  Startups  tab of  The Ultimate Troubleshooter  and for  DESKADKEEP  and  DESKADSERV, do the following in turn :  right-click and choose  “Delete from the hard disk the file that this Startup points to”;  next, right-click on the entry again and this time choose  “Delete this Startup Entry”.

4)  Click on the big green  APPLY  button to make your changes stick.

5)  Start  Windows Explorer  or  My Computer, whichever you’re most comfortable with, and delete the following folder :  C:\Program Files\DeskAd Service.

6)  Restart your PC into Normal Mode.

7)  Make sure you have up‑to‑date reputable antivirus software and run a full virus scan on your PC.

8)  Download  Spybot  or  Ad-Aware  from our  Downloads  library and scan your PC for adware and spyware.
