Do I Have A Virus??

I’m running Windows 98 on a Dimension XPS. Friday, I turned on my PC, when it was done starting up everything was gone!! All that I see is a blank green background and my mouse arrow, there are no Icon's, no toolbar, nothing!! And nothing happens when I try clicking on the screen or typing any key combinations-(except ctrl-alt-del). I ran all the diagnostics on the resource CD and everything came back fine. So I called Microsoft and spent 3 hours on the phone with a girl in India, she finally had me reinstall the software that came with my PC using the product recovery CD, and the problem was still there. Do I have a Virus?? I’d really appreciate it if anyone here knows what’s wrong and can please help!

If you reinstalled the operating system - it can't be a virus - check out the hardware boards for help.

GMarum,

Did you do a dirty reinstall over the old operating system or a clean install (format the hard disk drive and install the operating system)?

She just had me do a reinstall over the existing software, so that I didn't lose my files? Was this wrong? Is there a way to do a clean install and not lose all my files on the drive?

That was a dirty install, and we normally only advise that to get your data off before doing a clean install to a formated drive.

I would suggest that you copy your data (including email adressbook and favorites) to a CDR or Floppy drive, and then follow the advise from the top of this board - learning, user guides - and find the one for your system and operating system.

Best of luck.
