google redirect virus
I need help to get rid of this malware, after trying several removal tools without success. Can anyone help, please?
Whenever I click on a result from a Google search I get taken to other sites, usually sales locations such as E-Bay or Kelkoo. Typing addresses in directly works OK, but the redirects from the search page are getting more and more frequent - initially this only happened sometimes, but now almost all links are hijacked.
There are some common features - one address that appears frequently while the redirect is happening is (address adjusted with xx):
hxxp://www.liwlby.net/?search=m%26s&n=1291372258
A dialog box sometimes pops up during the redirect, saying that it is 'Search Mirror'.
I have tried the following tools so far:
Microsoft Malware Removal Tool
Windows Live Onecare scan
Malwarebytes
Hitman Pro 3.5
TDSS Killer
ATF cleaner
Spybotsd162
SuperAntiSpyware
I have now run a Hijack This scan, and this was the log produced:

Hi,
Please Disable all Anti-virus/Anti-Spyware/FireWall on your machine(instructions via links below)
Please download ComboFix.exe. Please visit THIS webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
ComboFix MUST be saved to your desktop before running the tool
* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
When prompted to install the recovery console please make sure to do so as this is a VERY IMPORTANT backup of ComboFix (XP only, Vista/Windows 7 will NOT be propmted to install the recovery console)
You will need to be conected to the net to install the recovery console, if you can not install it DO NOT run ComboFix,
Post back and we will install it manually.
DO NOT mouse click when ComboFix is running as this will cause ComboFix to Stall and it will not work as it should
EXTRA NOTES:
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
Thanks,
K27.

Hi,
PLEASE BE SURE TO DISABLE ALL PROTECTIVE SOFTWARE THAT IS RUNNING ON YOUR MACHINE BEFORE RUNNING COMBOFIX, SO THAT COMBOFIX IS NOT HINDERED IN ITS REMOVAL PROCESS
Please Disable all Anti-virus/Anti-Spyware/FireWall on your machine(instructions via links below)
Next we are going to run ComboFix in a slightly different way
1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:
Quote:
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe (NOTE: You may receive a message that there is a newer version of Combofix available, please allow Combofox to update if you get this message)
Combofix will prompt for a file to be uploaded, please allow it to do so.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.
NOTE: If ComboFix does not reboot the system, please do so manually
Please post back the fresh Combofix log and a status report on how the system is running.
Thanks
K27.

Hi - I have now run Combofix again as instructed.
It created an upload file and weblink, and I have submitted the file as requested. The logfile produced is attached below. Since then I have tried a few dozen searches, following several links on each results page, and all have worked OK.

Hi,
Your logs now appear to be clean and your system is running to a satisfactory standard. We have some housekeeping to do which I will post the instructions for now. This will be follow by some general advice for how to maintain the system and how to minimize the chances of this happening in the future.
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:
ComboFix /uninstall
Note the space between Combofix and /
Please uninstall the other programs we used as without proper guidance they can seriously harm the workings of Windows and your PC
You can also then delete the non invasive DDS program and the two logs it created on your desktop by right click each file and then click delete.
.
Download and scan with CCleaner
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
In the Applications Tab:
4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.
.
Adobe Acrobat/Reader is out of date please update to the latest version from HERE (NOTE: On the Download page, please make sure to uncheck the box next to the "McAfee Scan" item as it is not needed)
Once you have the latest version of Adobe Reader installed, please uninstall all outdated version that remain in the add/Remove programs list on your system in control panel.
Now some advice on how to surf safe in the future.
ALWAYS keep all programs on your PC up to date and this especially means your Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware/Firewall/Java and Adobe programs.
They can all be found via the "All Programs" feature in the start menu and if opened will 100% have a update feature somewhere.
NEVER use more than ONE Anti-Virus program,
NEVER use more than ONE resident Full time Anti-Spyware program,
NEVER use more than ONE Software Firewall,(and never use the Windows built in Firewall as it will not keep you protected)
As more than one of each of these will conflict with each other and leave you just as vunrable as not having them.
You can get some VERY GOOD FREE ones from HERE
Its always a good idea to back these up with SpywareBlaster as this will run in the background and not conflict with any of your other Security.
Also give WinPatrol a try as it is a very good program that will inform you of any changes being made to your system in the same way that User Account Control does but better, (DO NOT switch off UAC if you install WinPatrol, it is still very much needed)
Research and consider using a HARDWARE Firewall as this will provide a very good extra layer of protection.
Scan with each piece of your security Daily and at the very least two daily.
Always keep a few on-demand scanners on your machine and use them every other day, such as,
If you use IE then consider using a more secure browser such as FireFox or Opera
Install all the latest Windows updates from HERE
or by clicking start>all programs>Windows update, and keep going back and doing these untill you have all the avalible updates untill none are showing.
Its a good idea to set Windows Update to automatic so as not to miss any Important updates.
Always you a site advisor such as WOT to confirm the sites you are using are really the sites they say they are.
There is a version of WOT avalible for both IE and FIreFox.
Downloading and installing Secunia PSI will help keep the system fully updated.
It runs quietly in the background and will give a balloon pop-up from the task bar each time a program needs updating. Just click the Secunia task bar icon and the program will open. You will then see a list of the program(s) that needs updating, click the blue circle under the "Solution" heading, and you will be taken directly to the download for the exploited program.
And please read these links for adivce on Computer Security:

If you have any other questions then please fill free to post back,
I will mark this thread as solved tomorrow,
Safe Surfing,
K27.

Hi K27.
Thanks for all of these clean-up and future protection instructions, and for all of your help with this - I was beginning to lose the will to carry on, but you have been really clear and helpful in resolving the problem. Apologies for not responding for a few days, but I have been ill.
I have two outstanding queries:
When I last ran ComboFix as part of our analysis the executable icon disappeared from my Desktop after the programme had run and exited. I presumed that it had some sort of time limited life, and didn't worry until I tried to remove it now as suggested - the 'Run' command to uninstall returned a 'Not Found' for Combofix. I did a search and the only related files found were 4 log files, a copy of the submission file used to submit one of the reports, and a couple of folders. I deleted most of these, but now have one left that refuses to allow access - c:\ Qoobox\BackEnv - and so I cannot see what's in there or delete it, or the parent Qoobox folder.
The other is re Secunia PSI - after installing it is sitting in my system tray showing a System Score of 94%, but I am not sure if I should be doing something about it (is this good/bad/OK?). When I try to open it a box opens briefly and then closes again before showing any information. Should it run as a programme that I can open and interact with, or does it only require input whenever it finds something that should be updated?
Thanks again for all of your help, and I hope that these are just final snags in how I have set things up.

Hi,
Your Welcome,
Please re-download Combofix from HERE, please DO NOT run the tool, just save it to the desktop.
Once Combofix is saved to the desktop, please follow these instructions for uninstalling the tool.
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:
ComboFix /Uninstall
As for Secunia, there will always be a taskbar icon while the program is installed, the program will regularly check for updates to programs on the system as well as monitor system changes and vulnerabilities. If you right click the taskbar icon and then click select the program should open, if this fails go to "Start > All Programs > Secunia" and the program should open that way. It will then inform you of anything that needs updating and will provide a link to the update. Install any that it lists.
If you have any further questions or troubles relating to the above problems, please feel free to post back.
Thanks.

HI.
The ComboFix download / uninstall worked with no problem; thanks.
I still cannot get Secunia to work. I tried uninstalling and re-downloading and installing but the with the same result - the programme appears to be resident, there is an icon in the system tray (showing Amber, 94%) and it is listed in the Start/programme list, but they both have the same result when clicked: a PSI dialog box briefly pops up, with a blank white space and no text or graphics, and then it disappears again. I checked out the home site and it suggests that a scan should open and run when first downloaded - this does not happen either.
Is there something wrong with my sytem settings? I have checked and my Macafee firewall shows full access for both Secunia components.

Hi, K27.
I managed to find a fix for this on a Secunia forum - I had to uncheck Advanced Text Services under the programme properties Compatibility tab, and PSI is now running OK. That seems to be everything working, so thanks again for all the help.
