Google Toobar hijacking "New Tab" page
Okay, I can already "hear" Joe saying I should have gotten rid of the Google Toolbar long ago :emotion-5: , but for the sake of those who have/use it:
The toolbar automatically updated itself yesterday. (Comodo's firewall alerted me... so yes, I could have stopped it and avoided the update... but I let it)...
and later that day, when I clicked on the button to open a new tab in IE, i was rather suprised to see a Google-toolbar page, listed in the address bar as toolbar:newtab , which was prepared to show me the websites that I visit most frequently, my recently created bookmarks, and my recently closed tabs. While potentially useful information... and perhaps at some future point i might in fact choose to test it out... I was certainly annoyed to see this change implemented without my consent.
for anyone else who encounters this, here's the solution:
click on the "wrench" icon in the google toolbar, select Options, Search, and scroll down to Web-Browsing Tools, to UNcheck the box lableled Enable the Google new tab page. Doing so will revert IE to is default about:Tabs page.

For those who like this toolbar, but hate it updating itself automatically, there is another possible solution.
When I was using the google toolbar with previous versions of IE, I was able to block its automatic updates by adding google.com to my hosts file, or possibly to my restricted sites (can't recall which for sure). The toolbar still worked, but the version remained frozen at the one I liked.
Don't know if this would still work or not.

Thanks ky331. I do not think my Google Toolbar updated yet, but I did uncheck per your instructions. Annie
