have i been hacked?

Following a crash on my dimension 3000 I am having some strange problems.

First off I cannot download microsoft updates...........i get a numbered error message.

Also I cant get my ip address by using the "ipconfig" run command??????????? not a recognised command??

Thirdly SpyBot shows a registry entry "proxy overide for anti virus and firewall".....I have removed the entry but it keeps coming back...............all very confusing.

Any advice much appreciated!

Go to here and download HiJackThis to its own folder that you create on your C:\ drive.
After it is downloaded open the program and click Scan and Save to log.

Post the log that it generates in the HiJackThisForum for analysis.

What exactly do you mean by a "crash" of your computer? Some people would consider a crash to mean that they had to shut the computer off and turn it back on, while others would consider it to mean that their hard drive failed and was replaced.

In either case, what you're describing sounds more like Windows corruption than a virus. You might want to try using the system restore function that is found in your System Tools in your Start menu. That will take your system registry back to a time before the problems started, and in a lot of cases, will fix the kind of errors that you've mentioned.

Wanda,

My money on  this would be to follow Steves advice first. This way you can determine if your system is clean. Then if the problem is not resolved, you can look at a Windows corruption. The PC Restore may be a quick fix if you have your important data saved, just a thought.
