Help Please - getting "System Alert: Spyware Detected" warning popup constantly

Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.

To disable Ad-Watch:

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

• 
  Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
  Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off
• 
  3. Uncheck (red X) both items.
  
  Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn them back on using the same steps but this time select ONLY Active. Ad-Watch will prompt you to accept those registry changes that were made in the cleanup. They must be accepted.
  
  Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

  Extract all the files to your Desktop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

  2. Locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  3. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. Right click on Ewido in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
  4. You can change those settings AFTER I have verified that your system is clean. Do not do it before then, or our fixes during the next few days may not work.
     Click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
     
  5. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display Update successful
  6. 
     
  7. Close ewido. Do not run it yet.
  8.

     Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
     
     Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
     This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
     
     Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool";. It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. More info on that here:

One note....when setting up ewido, it immediately popped open a box saying Malware Found, citing a Tojan.Small found and recommended clean and quarentine. I did that before sleeping all the settings you recommended...I hope that was OK. Here are my files now. Thanks!!!

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

• If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
• Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
• Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
• Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
• Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
• Login on your usual account.

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If it is infected and a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace the infected wininet.dll with the clean file. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

• Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
• Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
• On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
• In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
• On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
• Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
• Click OK.

Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders.

• In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
• 
  
• Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
• 
  
• Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
• 
  
• Restart back into Normal Mode.

Please post your rapport.txt, the ewido log, and a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi BB,

Well, that scan took some time but it finally finished. When I was in the Cntl Panel in the Customize Desktop, Web tab, there was nothing but an empty box under Web Pages. Here are my latest files; How do I look?

There are just a few things left to fix -- mostly optional.

First we will need to disable ewido so it does not interfere with HijackThis. You may enable it when we are finished.
To disable ewido:
Open ewido. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. Right-click on ewido in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".

Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.
To disable Ad-Watch:

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

  Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
  Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off
• 
  3. Uncheck (red X) both items.
  
  Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn them back on using the same steps but this time select ONLY Active. Ad-Watch will prompt you to accept those registry changes that were made in the cleanup. They must be accepted.
  
  If you do not use Party Poker uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs.
  then delete the Party Poker folder in your Program Files.
  
  Please launch HijackThis and place a check next to these:

  ( CTHELPER is a background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers. The theory is that 3rd party manufacturers can use the CTHELPER plug-in interface to produce drivers, add-on features, and fixes that will integrate with a tighter fit with Creative’s sound drivers and utilities. Given its purpose CTHELPER would normally be classified as a "leave alone" background task. It also allows Creative speaker setup to be synchronized with Windows Control Panel speaker setting. Without it running that check box in Creative speaker setting is not functional (settings are not in sync). Unfortunately there are often problems with CTHELPER, most notably that it can use 100% of CPU time so it's best left disabled unless you need it )

  Close all windows and click "Fix Checked".
  
  Reboot.
  
  Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
  Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
  Please make sure the following are checked:
  -- Downloaded Program Files
  -- Temporary Internet Files
  -- Recycle Bin
  -- Temporary Files
  Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
  
  It looks as if you need to install Java. If you have any older versions, remove them; otherwise install Java per the following instructions:
  Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components:
  
  1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web
  browser
  2. Click Start > Control Panel
  * Depending on your OS or configuration, you may have to click Start
  >Settings > Control Panel
  3. Open Add or Remove Programs
  * If you have Windows 98 or Windows 2000, open Add/Remove
  Programs
  4. Click once on any item listing Java Runtime Environment in the name
  * Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read
  each entry in the list
  5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
  6. Follow steps 4 and 5 as many times as necessary to remove all
  versions of Java. ** If at any time during the uninstallations, you are asked to reboot, do so. Then return to Add/Remove and continue removing any other versions of Java until all components of Java have been removed.
  7. Delete the Java folder in Program Files.
  8. Proceed with reinstalling Java. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this.
  Go to Sun Java and click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it.
  
  When the download is complete, close the browser and install it.
  
  Reboot.
  
  After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
  If everything is running well....
  To flush the XP System Restore Points:
  (Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
  
  Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
  When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
  On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
  Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
  
  Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.
  
  Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.
  
  You may have already taken some of these steps:
  1. Visit Windows Update:
  Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.

  2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
  Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
  Now press "Custom Level."
  In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.
  
  3. Download and install the following free programs:

  I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.

  You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button
  
  7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.

  10. Make sure you are using the most udpated version of Java.

On a side note, I have been getting a message at start-up now (since our changes) about the "System Configuration Utility" The Selective box is checked along with all the indented other boxes contained within it. The message suggests that I switch back to "Normal Start Up". Do you agree?

It would be your decision to go back to Normal Startup. It is because we changed some none essential things that are not needed to run at Startup such as this:
