HELP - PLEASE: Personal Firewall messages, etc.
I have Norton Personal Firewall on my computers. I have two Dell Dimension 4550's, 250 MB Mem., 2 Mghz, Pentium IV, plenty of hard drive space. I appreciate the blocks I get when others attempt access to my computer, such as "Address xx.xxx.xxx. has atttempted to access your computer and it was blocked. It had Trojan Horse, etc." This is not close to the actual words, but those in the know about this, are familiar with what I am talking about. I got one today, a medium risk it said, about NHUPdate.exe is attempting to connect with my computer, etc. Again, words to that effect. I had the option to block or not. Well, now the question. How are we users with limited ability and knowledge on computers, especially now that the industry to going much too fast for me to keep up, lnow whether to block or allow access? I don't have the time or desire to keep educated, but I want to have some sense of at least part of what is going on these days. I have blocked this NHUPdater.exe today and before when it has appeared. I read some of the information I got through search engines on NHUPdater.exe, but frankly still don't know whether I should allow access or not. I suppose some of these that try to access my computer, I should allow access, but in general can someone guide me here? Could I use the rule that if I know the company's name, such as Norton or such, I could/should ok their access, but any others that I have not heard of nor know what their mission is, block?
Sure would like some basic advice. There are times that I wish I hadn't put a Personal Firewall in my computer.
I apologize for such a general question, but these days I can't even make up a question that makes sense. Back in the beginning, even up to the Windows 3.1 days, I felt I had a much easier time with computering, but today, I am not sure at all what to do. I do not wish to call Dell on each question I have in this regard and on other things that pop up these days. I would get nothing else done.

Well... I googled NHUPdate.exe and didn't find a single thing... Are you sure it was NHupdate and not Nupdate? I did find some stuff on Nupdate.exe and I think it's associated to a Norton product. NHUPdate.exe does make a little bit more since being that it's connecting to your computer without your permission. Were you trying to update or upgrade or do anything with Norton at the time this happened? Did you just receive the popup and then go from there? Is there anyway you can get the IP address from which the program originated? Maybe we can check up on it for you to ensure it's cleanliness... It's beginning to sound though like someone tried to connect to your computer using a "backdoor" program.

Demonik, I apologize for not responding to thank you for your answer to my post on the 23rd. I used to get a notice that I had a response to a post, but didn't get one when you responded. I will check to see why I didn't get the notice. Since no email had come about my post, I just assumed no response so decided to check the forum site and there you were.
Yes, this Firewall intercept did come up while I was updating a software program. It kept coming up time and again, because I blocked it the first time and kept blocking it. It finally stopped trying. I can get the IP address the next time I have this happen. I have had it before. When I get another one, I will block it, but get the detail and the IP address and email you. I am sure curious.
I still am in a quandry about what to do with some of these other ones that I am not sure what to do with. As I stated, or meant to, my motto, for the most part, is that if I don't know who is trying to get in, I block.
