help with Winfixer 2005, please!

Winfixer has gotten to me too!  Although, with mine, I cannot run any programs, including internet.  I ran Safe Mode and found the Winfixer file and deleted it, but everytime I boot up my computer and try to click on anything, it freezes and I have to shut it down manually.  please instruct!

What version of Windows are we talking and do you have the CD?

What file did you delete in Safe Mode?

Windows XP home edition.  I removed two files, one that said WinFixer 2005 install and another winfixer file.  I don't think I still have the CD, I looked thru my stuff and can't find it...thanks for any advice you are able to offer!

Does the same thing happen when you try it from Safe Mode?

On whatever computer you are using to post this, get HijackThis.exe from
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hjt199//HijackThis.exe
Save it to the floppy a:\ then move the floppy to the bad PC and
Ctrl + Alt + Del and select Task Manager then
Files, New Task (run) and type a:\hijackthis.exe OK.  This should bring up HijackThis.

If it works, Select the Scan and Save Log option and then let it save the log back to the floppy. Move the floppy back to the good computer and post it as a reply.

If it doesn't work then Files, New Task (run) and type cmd OK. This should bring up a black cmd window.  Type:

ren a:\hijackthis.exe a:\hijackthis.com
hijackthis.com

If it works proceed as before.

if not try:

rstrui.exe

This should bring up the System Restore window if it is still working.  Restore your system to the earliest possible date.  Then see if you can download and run hijackthis.

Boot into safe Mode again

and run HijackTHis and check the following then hit Fix Checked.

Then in Task Manager, Files, New Task(run) type: services.msc, OK.  THis should bring up the services window.  Scroll donw in the right pane and find System Startup Service  and double click.  Change StartUp Type from Automatic to Disabled.  Then OK.

Now open up a cmd window: Task Manager, Files, New Task(run) type: cmd, OK and type:

cd \
dir /s explorer*.*

(It will take a while.  When it comes back it will show every folder where explorer.exe is hiding and also give us the date and size.  Is there one in C:\ ?  If so delete it)

del /f C:\explorer.exe

(Note down the locations, size and date for any explorer.exe files it finds and put those in the reply.  We hope to find one in C:\Windows)

(Now type)

sigverif

(When it comes up press the Start button then when it finishes, look through the list and see if you have wininet.dll on the list.)

(now type)

sfc /scannow

(It will take a while.  It may ask you for the XP CD but if you don't have it then tell it to continue.  IF it tells you what files it doesn't like then write them down)

(Reboot, -Did you get a desktop?-  run a new scan and post it as a reply.)

okay, working on getting the file sizes and dates from the scan...on the last step, when I typed sfc /scannow, it gave me a message that said "Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.  The specific error code is 0x0000066a [The RPC server is unavailable]"  I will post the list later.  thanks

WinFixer is back:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Deb\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WLAZODQ3\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"

Boot into Safe Mode and check the above then Fixed Check.

Also we need to clean your temp files:

Click Start | Run and in the Open box type cleanmgr and click OK
or Task Manager, Files, New Task (run), cleanmgr, OK

Then select C:

Make sure you have it clean the Temporary Internet Files.

Did you clean your temp files:

Task Manager, Files, New Task (run), cleanmgr, OK

Then select C:

Make sure you have it clean the Temporary Internet Files.

yes, I was able to clean my temp files. including the ones from the internet.  I re-ran the hijack this after cleaning the files and tried to again delete what I was supposed to and got the same message....

Are you still working without a desktop?  Did you ever get the info on explorer.exe files that I asked for?

Download killbox from:

Save it to C:\

Run it (Task Manager, Files, New Task(run), C:\killbox.exe, OK)  then in the box where it says full path of file to delete put in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Deb\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WLAZODQ3

Click on  the Delete on Reboot and DELTREE options then press the red button and let it reboot into regular mode.  Then if you still have to boot into Safe Mode to run HijackThis, do so and post the log as a reply.

Are you able to run IE (iexplore.exe) on the sick machine?

Sorry for all of the work.  Didn't realize you had so many of them.

Not sure why you have so many explorer.exe files and none of them seem to be the right size.

It appears that explorer.exe is running when you go to Safe Mode.  Do you have a desktop then?

Let's get silent runners from

Run per the instructions in:

Send me the Startup log that it generates.  rkinner AT att DOT net
