Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You just run it if you find you can't get on the net and things should work OK after it reboots your system.

Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.

Now shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.
Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check the box in front of the following and then Fix
Checked:

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.

Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Start, Run, cmd, OK. This should bring up a black DOS type window. Type:
rmdir /s /q "C:\Program Files\MarketBrowser"
exit

Hint:  Instead of typing you can copy a line (highlight the line and then Ctrl + c) then move to the cmd window and paste it (rightclick)

Reboot into normal mode and run another HijackThis log and post it. Let's
see how we did.

To correct your Desktop after removing the wp.exe file:

Start, Run, regedit, OK to bring up the regedit program.

find HKey_Current_User->Software ->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion>policies (Hit the + sign in front of each Key as you find them. That will open up the subkeys.)

Under Policies is usually an entry named System. If you find it highlight it and press the Delete key. Then OK. Close the program and reboot.

Start, Control Panel, Display (Properties). This should bring up Display Properties/Background. Change the wallpaper to something else and Apply. You may also need to select Web and uncheck the box where it says View My Active Desktop as a web page. OK

thank you ron. I would have responded sooner, but I after I used hijack this and rebooted, my hal.dll file was missing or corrupt, so I had to use the recovery console to fix that.

here is a new version of my hijack this log file.

Looks like a totally different PC.  Totally different set of critters.

I've never known hijackthis to mess up the hal.dll so you may also have some hard drive damage.  You might want to have XP check the hard drive for bad sectors after you get rid of the malware or right away if the problem comes back:

Start then open My Computer, right-click the drive, Properties, Tools, Check Now..., Select Options, Start.

You may be prompted to restart Windows before it will run.

With farmmext we need to make sure we can see all files so lets:

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Uncheck the Hide Extensions of known File Types

  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.

  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

I assume you have the two files I told you to get before.  But with this new bug we should also get the latest version of AdAware Se Personal and the VX2 Cleaner.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Save it and install it.  Make sure it will run and get the latest updates and install the vx2 cleaner add on but let's wait to let it do a full scan.

Now we can boot right into Safe Mode and run HijackThis (Scan Only)

Check the box in front of each of the following and then hit Fix Checked.

Now run AdAware with the VX2 cleaner.  Let it kill everything it finds.

As a final check we want to Search for Files or Folders  that begin with farmmext and delete them.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:

Click Start, click Search, click All files and folders, and then click More advanced options.

Click to select the Search system folders and Search hidden files and folders check boxes.

Put farmmext in the box and Search Now.  (Hope that's clear enough.  Don't have an XP box handy.)

Delete anything it finds.

Then reboot.  Run another HijackThis log and post it.  Let's see if we got everything.

Ron

PS I got a note when I posted this that there was an invalid Http in there and it had been deleted.  Guess it may have slightly modified the hjt entries I told you to kill.  I have also deleted the "=" at the end of each line in the R section.  On the HP forum they cause the forum to freak out and mess up the format for the next post.
