Hijacked computer fixed but now booting slow
Greetings,
Last week I had the dubious distinction of having my computer hijacked by safety defender malware. I successfully removed it (with the help of the great people at Spywareinfo.com) but now it takes over two minutes for my system to boot. The monitor actually goes black, turns off and then the system will boot . I have run and cleaned the system with Hijackthis, Spybot, Adaware, run Symantecs antivirus 2006 scanner, performed Windows updates, and also ran bitdefender and houscall scans. Nothing seems to help. Anyone have any suggestions.

I looked at your log at SWI.
Have you loaded any additional programs since that time?
Or did this happen right after the fix at SWI?

Bamajim,
Actually, it started before I ran the SWI scan (ran it again this weekend to ensure that I didn't have any additional problems. Scan found Trojan.zlob which I deleted).

Lets do this in a couple of steps, I'm a little concerned that you were re infected after had it fixed.
Run HJT, click the "Open MISC Tool Section" button
Near the top to the window you will see "generate startup log", next to that you will need to check the "list also minor sections" box. Run the "generate Startup log" and post that log here as a reply

Download Registry Cleaner and save it to your desktop
Click on the RegCleanr.exe
After it runs, select;
Tools (at the top) > Registry Cleanup > Do Them All
Then 'Select' (at top left) > choose ALL
'Remove Selected" (at bottom right)
A backup of all that was removed will be made, just choose 'Backups' (top right) to view them, you can delete them when you're confident they're no longer needed.

You will see a list of programs that run at startup
Uncheck the ones that you don't want to start automatically, I've highlited some suggestions. This will in no way hinder the operation of these programs, they just won't start up everytime you boot up. Try to them a couple at a time, not all at once. There are some you need, and will recognize, so don't get carried away. Once done; Click Apply->> then O.K.
You will need to reboot for the changes to take effect. When you restart, you will get a window that says msconfig has been changed, just click o.k. After you've made all of the changes you wish, the next time your reboot, just check the box "do not show this message again"

Bamajim,
Thanks for the update. Per your instructions I downloaded and ran the reg cleaner and deleted all the items that you highlited (except for the Java scheduler) and rebooted. After booting I ran a Norton Quickscan and rebooted again. Unfortunately, it still took 2min 45sec until the 'Starting Windows' screen displayed. The monitor also 'cycled'. I'm not sure if this could be causing the problem but when I ran the 4 virus checkers this weekend (Norton, bitdefender, houscall and Windows safety center) all of them stated that they found and deleted Trojan.zlob. It did not come up when I ran the quickscan just now. Could this be hiding somewhere and causing the problem. I went on the Symantec site and found there are multiple types of this Trojan some causing system degradation. My system doesn't seem to be running that much slower but the boot time is greatly increased. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Sorry for the delay in responding,
Since you have a laptop, they are more prone to be a little more fussy on startup, so to reduce start up and shut down times, you need to have as few programs as possible "auto loading" at startup. You may use what ever programs you like, but we need to lmit those "autoload" programs.
Below is one possible conflict between 2 programs;
nhksrv.exe is a process that belongs to DELL and Compaq systems. It is used to halt any configured hotkeys while the screensaver is running.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FastUser] C:\WINDOWS\System32\fast.exe
Installs as part of Windows XP PowerToys as an option for very-fast user switching (allowing a keystoke to switch users instead of using the login screen). It is only used for the hot-key switch and yet it hogs 1.5 megs of memory in two separate processes (one run by the user & one by the system). Optional install in PowerToys
both of these are running, I would suggest fixing the above item in HJT. The program will still work on demand, it just won't auto load.
One other thing to look at
How much free space do you have on your Hardrive?
To check
Click->>My Computer. A window will open, Find C:\ and rightClick.
On the General tab it will indicate free space. The reason for asking this, is that Windows accesses the Paging File on each start up and shut down. It is reccommened that there be 20% free space left on the drive so Windows can access and read this file quickly. If there is not that much room, Windows will have to read this file piecemeal, which will take longer.

Sorry it took so long for the reply - I have been gone all week on a business trip and just returned home. Thanks for the update.
Actually, my system is not a laptop, it is a Dell Dimension 4300. It has a 74.4 GB harddrive with 56.6 GB used, 17.8 GB used.
I will try your suggestion regarding the hotkey and PowerToys option and see if there is any response.
Do you think that I may need to do a Windows reinstall? Hope not. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FastUser] C:\WINDOWS\System32\fast.exe as you suggested. Unfortunately, the system did not boot any faster but the desktop did seem to load quicker. I also attempted to find the
nhksrv.exe
program but couldn't find it. When I run msconfig I see something that seems to be a little 'weired' - there is a box checked but there is no name that displays what the start up item is that is running at startup, nor is there an entry at the command line column. The location is 'HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run'
Would you suggest disabling this from the startup configuration.

As far as your question about a blank entry in msconfig, showing only a location; Yes, "uncheck" it in msconfig. Reply with the results.
Were getting closer to a resolution.
The figures you gave me regarding HD 74.4 total 56.6 in use; we are getting real close to the 80/20 rule. That is Windows basically likes to have 20% room left on an HD for paging files that are used during start up, etc.If the room is not available, then the paging file has to be accessed/loaded more than once, increasing boot times.
After you uncheck the item listed in msconfig, if that does not resolve the concern, we may need to consider freeing up some HD space

bamajim, in a 5/9/2006 reply you gave the below link for regcleaner.exe. I tried this but it wont run correctly on my windows xp home edition. It placed a desktop shortcut to regcleanr.exe and a regcleaner folder on my desktop. No screen popped up with a tools button to select "Tools > Registry Cleanup >Do Them All". I tried deleting the regcleaner program but it wont let me. I got the error access denied disk full or file in use. The computer I downloaded it on does not have a problem that i know of. My intent was to download it and copy to a cd to put on a computer I am having trouble with. I tried it first on the bad computer and it would not run. I then tried it on mine an it wont work either. My grand kids did everything I told them not to do on their computer and it is running poorly with a bunch of spyware i cant seem to get rid of.
