Hi, Karen,

Please print these instructions so you can refer to them easily.
Please disable Ad-watch until your computer is clean. Its protective feature that monitors your Registry to prevent bad changes may also prevent good changes.

To disable Ad-Watch:

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

  • Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off

  • 3. Uncheck (red X) both items.

Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn them back on using the same steps but this time select ONLY Active. Ad-Watch will prompt you to accept those registry changes that were made in the cleanup. They must be accepted.

Please proceed with ALL these steps whether you can find Winfixer in Add/Remove or not:
Please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall WinFixer2005.
    Then remove the folder here:
    C:\Program Files\ WinFixer2005

If it is not in Add/Remove, skip those steps and continue with the test of these steps.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
    • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
    • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
    • Turn your computer back on.

    • Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune:
      http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1]
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser Click Firefox at
the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please
      click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser Click Opera at the
      top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please
      click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located
at the bottom of each menu.

    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Thank you for submitting that.

Now let's see if we can clean it out of there. Make sure Ad-watch is still disabled.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download
Save it to your Desktop.

Try again to uninstall Winfixer2005 using Add/Remove Programs. Whether you are successful or not, it is important that you continue with these instructions, and please print them for easy reference while you are working.
** All the files that I am asking you to delete may not be on your system, so do not be alarmed if at any time you get a message that they cannot be found.

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to these:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6f706592-1057-4069-9121-51c5f6e080eb} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kbdmgm.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Mitchell\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S1Q3WH67\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinFixer2005] "C:\Program Files\WinFixer2005\UWFX5.exe" /scan
O20 - Winlogon Notify: kbdmgm - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kbdmgm.dll

Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select: Delete on Reboot
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us>

Click on the All Files button.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us>

Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\Windows\System32\kbdmgm.dll
C:\Windows\System32\kbdmgm.bak
C:\Windows\System32\kbdmgm.ini
C:\Windows\System32\mgmdbk.bak
C:\Windows\System32\mgmdbk.bak1
C:\Windows\System32\mgmdbk.bak2
C:\Windows\System32\mgmdbk.ini
C:\Windows\System32\mgmdbk.ini2
C:\Windows\System32\mgmdbk.tmp
C:\Windows\System32\mgmdbk.tmp1
C:\Windows\System32\mgmdbk.tmp2

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

Click the red-and-white Delete File button.
Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message.).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually into normal mode.

[Note: Killbox makes backups of all deleted files & folders in a folder called C:\!killbox ]
If Killbox tells you any files are missing don't worry but make a note and let us know in your next reply.

Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Finally, please post a fresh Hijackthis log and let me know how things are running. Thanks.

Hi,

I followed the steps. There is one file I can't seem to delete. When I try to delete this file:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Mitchell\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S1Q3WH67\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"

I get the folloing message from hijackthis:

Unexpected error occurred!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe".exe).

Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.

You're welcome. We're almost done...

"Remember when we have completed cleaning your machine to turn them back on.."
We have not finished, but Ad-watch is still running. Please disable it again, or you will have problems with HijackThis.

Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools>Internet Options>General Tab> Delete Temporary Internet Files as well as Offline Content. Then OK and close that window. Close IE.

Launch HijackThis and check this entry:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Mitchell\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S1Q3WH67\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"
Close all windows except HJT and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks! :)

Hi,

Unfortunately I received the same error message. I'm using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, but I switched just a few days ago, after the problem.

Thanks for the help!

Ignore that error.
I don't understand how Ad-watch keeps getting enabled if you disabled it. Apparently, it is interfering with HijackThis.
Please disable it again.

Also disable McAfee Anti-Spyware:
Disable the Auto Protect setting in your settings for the application.
Enable again after our fix has been completed.

Please boot into safemode. Launch HijackThis, and place a check next to this one again:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Mitchell\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S1Q3WH67\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"

Still in Safemode, go here and DELETE the specified file:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Mitchell\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S1Q3WH67\ WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe -- FILE

Reboot normally.

Your outdated Java is what made you susceptible to the infection, so before we go further, let's update your Java.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components:

1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web
browser
2. Click Start > Control Panel
* Depending on your OS or configuration, you may have to click Start
>Settings > Control Panel
3. Open Add or Remove Programs
* If you have Windows 98 or Windows 2000, open Add/Remove
Programs
4. Click once on any item listing Java Runtime Environment in the name
* Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read
each entry in the list
5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
6. Follow steps 4 and 5 as many times as necessary to remove all
versions of Java. ** If at any time during the uninstallations, you are asked to reboot, do so. Then return to Add/Remove and continue removing any other versions of Java until all components of Java have been removed.
7. Delete the Java folder in Program Files.
8. Proceed with reinstalling Java. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this.
Go to Sun Java and click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it.

When the download is complete, close the browser and install it.

Reboot.

Please post a fresh Hijackthis log.
If Ad-watch does not stay disabled until we are finished, you may have to just remove Ad-aware/Ad-watch and reinstall it later after you are clean.

Hi,

I uninstalled ad-ware and shut off McAfee, but the file is still there. I can't even find the folder that the file exists in when I go through windows explorer. Here's the hijack this log. I did update my Java program.

Thanks!

Adwatch is still in your log, so either this is an outdated log, or you still have Ad-watch. Please disable it if it is running.

Please print these instructions so you can follow the steps in sequence exactly as written.

Download Ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

  1. Once you have downloaded Ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports"
      • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
      • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
      • Close Ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
        1. Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

        2. Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to this:
          O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Karen Mitchell\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S1Q3WH67\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"
Close all windows except HJT and click "Fix Checked"

          Now for Ewido...
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
        3. Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
        4. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
        5. ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
        6. Once the scan is complete do the following:
        7. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
        8. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
        9. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
        10. Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and please post the results of the ewido report scan along with another HijackThis log.

Okay, I think the Ad-Aware is finally gone (at least I hope so). Here's the hijackthis log file. I am still not able to delete the file (same error as before).

So far, so good. HijackThis just cannot fix that entry. We'll do it this way:

Please disable Ewido while you run this fix. Otherwise, it may prevent the Registry changes. Just as with Ad-aware's Ad-watch, you may enable Ewido again when we have verified that your system is clean.
      From the system tray:
Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.

Copy/Paste all the text between the dotted lines to NotePad. Do not copy the dotted lines.
Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".
Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.
      ------------------------------------------------------------------
      REGEDIT4

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and an update on how the computer is running...

Super! Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
      -- Downloaded Program Files
      -- Temporary Internet Files
      -- Recycle Bin
      -- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
      If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
      1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
      Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

      2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
      Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

      3. Download and install the following free programs:
      a. SpywareBlaster:
      http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
      Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
      b. SpywareGuard:
      http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
      Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial50.html
Periodically check for updates in both programs.

      4. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads
Sunbelt Kerio has a free version: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

      5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
      http://www.mozilla.org/

      6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

      a. Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

      b. SpyBot S&D: http://safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-05-31.html

I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.

If you have recently installed Ewido, it is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

      7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.
      Here is the link:
      http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

      8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbr.

      9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 7.08. It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.
      Info here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows
If you need additional assistance, the Adobe forums are here: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html

      10. Make sure you are using the most udpated version of Java.
If you need to update, remove all prior versions using Add/Remove Programs, and delete the Java folder in Program Files.
You can go here to download the latest version: Sun Java and click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it. When the download is complete, close the browser.
      Proceed with reinstalling Java. Reboot.

      11. Here are some helpful articles:
"So how did I get infected in the first place?"
