You have the new tough CoolWebSearch infection. There is a new tool available to fix it, but I'm waiting on some advice from Chris on the order in doing that cleanup.

First: you need an antivirus program badly. I'm amazed your system is not totally tanked considering you are running Bearshare.

If you don't have a commercial program, download a trial version from Norton:

http://nct.digitalriver.com/0001/

Or get a free version of AVG:

Free AVG Antivirus for home users: http://www.grisoft.com

Get the AV running, update definitions, and run a full system scan. Preferably run it in Safe Mode:

Reboot to SAFE MODE

FAQ 8 on this page: http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

After running the AV...

Relocate your hijackthis.exe file to a safe folder...preferably HJT in the first level of the C: drive.

See FAQ's 2,3,4 here:   http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

There is one file entry that appears to be a Trojan. It does not show up in any databases except for one entry in Google from two days ago for this .exe file startup entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [jopa] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysstartup.exe

Run Hijackthis from new folder, scan and check that line entry mentioned above. Click on fix checked button with no other windows open except for Hijackthis.

Reboot to SAFE MODE and Show HIDDEN FILES and folders

FAQ 8 and 9 on this page: http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:

Drill on down and delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysstartup.exe   file   (Comments...this is a fairly new hostile file and if you are proficient with zipping files we would like a copy of it. Before deleting it, copy it to a folder and zip up the entire folder. If you can do this we will tell you where to submit the zipped file).

Reboot in normal mode Windows and run Disk Cleaner: type cleanmgr at Start/Run. Scan all hard drives and check all categories at the end and click OK.

I would also suggest you u
ninstall Viewpoint Media Player from "Add/Remove Programs" in the Windows® Control Panel. See here for comments.

Browse a bit and run a fresh Hijackthis log and post as a reply here.

Hi!

Well, I don't think I've had this much fun in a while........hurumph!!!

*I downloaded and ran the free AVG Antivirus (that was a big help) - although it did not want to run in safe mode.

*I was able to zip the sysstartup.exe file for you - I zipped a new folder and then copied and pasted the .exe into it.

*I did everything else you said

*I "uninstalled" Bearshare about 6 months ago - evidently it is still on our computer.  Is there a way to completely get rid of it??

*This CWS thing stinks.  It likes to redirect my webpages to www.super-spider.  It seems to happen consistently when I'm using any yahoo sites.

*I browsed a bit and here's my new log.

Thanks for all your help.

Andrea

>*I was able to zip the sysstartup.exe file for you - I zipped a new folder and then copied and pasted the .exe into it.

Thanks...click on my username above the tennis racket icon and send it to me in the email listed there.

>*I "uninstalled" Bearshare about 6 months ago - evidently it is still on our computer.  Is there a way to completely get rid of it??

We'll stop it in Hijackthis and delete the Bearshare folder.

>*This CWS thing stinks.  It likes to redirect my webpages to www.super-spider.  It seems to happen consistently when I'm using any yahoo sites

Let's try the shredder first, then we'll proceed from there:

You have a CoolWebsearch infection.

Get CW Shredder to repair your CoolWebSearch infestations:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip version 1.57.0

Follow the directions for running the program at the next link.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=47

At bleepingcomputer.com start reading at the section that says:

You can download this program here: CWShredder

(Note...we have noticed recently some CWS variants are harder to remove unless the shredder is run in Safe Mode...hit F8 while booting to enter Safe Mode and run the shredder.) Make sure you FIX any items it finds!

After cleaning with the shredder in Safe Mode do this:

Reboot in normal mode Windows and download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware). Use Spybot first. (1.3 version)
http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Follow the directions completely at:

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Reboot if asked by either program and let it complete any cleanup. Then reboot a final time after running both and run Windows Disk Cleanup: Start/Run/ type: cleanmgr

I check all the categories at the end of the scan and click OK.

See if you can relocate your hijackthis file to a new folder HJT:

FAQ's 2,3,4  http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

Then run Hijackthis and scan. Check the box left of these line entries:

Comments: Merijn (author of Hijackthis) is a little ambivalent about this line entry removal: "What to do:
In the case of a browser slowdown and frequent popups, have HijackThis fix this item if it shows up in the log. However, since only Coolwebsearch does this, it's better to use CWShredder to fix it. " So if's it's still present after use of the shredder (which he also authored) we'll follow his first advice: "have HijackThis fix this item if it shows up in the log."

With no other windows open except for Hijackthis...click fix checked button.

Okay, I followed all your instructions.

**The Spybot and Ad-aware removed a lot and when I ran the Hijackthis after that most of what you wanted me to remove wasn't there.  I ended up only having to remove four lines.

**When I went into safe mode to view the hidden files none of the ones that you wanted me to delete were there.  =)

**I deleted that Viewpoint Media Player last time and I noticed that there is a Viewpoint Manager.  Am I supposed to get rid of that too?

**I emailed you the sysstartup.exe file - did you get it?

**The AVG keeps giving me popups saying I have a Trojan (two actually).

The first Trojan was something like Startpage 4.O (I can't remember).  I ran AVG and it got rid of it.

Then I got a second message as follows:

--------------------

Virus

Trojan horse TalkStocks.C

Is found in file

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E763CE31-8FE5-424F-B9EB-07BB3F8F4220}\RP486\A0028800.exe

To remove this virus, please run AVG for Windows

------------

So I ran AVG and it didn't find anything.   ???

THEN I got another message saying that it found the first Trojan again that AVG supposedly got rid of before.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Here's my new log!!!  It looks so much better than the first one!  At least we're getting somewhere.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andrea

Looking better...I missed one Trojan first time...it will die a hard death now. *;-)

Run Hijackthis, scan, check, and fix checked button for these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A9A674BF-771F-42E5-A440-D20DDA85A862} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe
Comments: a virus...not to be confused with the legitimate Windows file winlogon.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode and look for and delete the winlogin.exe file   (don't delete the winlogon.exe file!)

It will be found in one of several locations:  C:\Windows   or C:\Windows\System32   or C:\Windows\System

You might use Start/Search to find it.

Reboot to regular mode Windows and browse a bit, then post a new log.

Answers to questions:

>**I noticed that there is a Viewpoint Manager.  Am I supposed to get rid of that too?

Not malware, but I wouldn't have it on my machine. You can uninstall it in Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs.

**I emailed you the sysstartup.exe file - did you get it?

Actually my email server on that account has been conked out for the past 4 hours...so unless you sent it earlier and I didn't see it, then it's probably still in the system waiting for a reboot of our email server Wed.

>Trojan horse TalkStocks.C Is found in file

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E763CE31-8FE5-424F-B9EB-07BB3F8F4220}\RP486\A0028800.exe

The XP System Restore folder...AV can't touch bad files saved there...we will flush your System Restore folder later and solve that problem.

Hijackthis said that it couldn't delete the O4 line because it was in use.  So I looked at task manager and didn't find it.  So I went into Safe Mode, found it and deleted it. When I ran HJT again the O4 line was gone.  Here's the new log............

thanks again!  =þ

You did great...nice strategy on that file....if not for a new bad variety of CWS (that is invisible to Hijackthis) I would deem you clean. It may be gone, but I doubt it. The entry from your first log:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

is the new black hat CWS infection and I can almost guarantee it is still lurking on your machine waiting to rear its ugly head again. So.. you can wait for the other shoe to drop...or take a proactive strategy:

......We're looking for a hidden .dll ...new fix available for XP and W2K only. Try this and see if you have success:

Shadowwar has come up with a fix for the hidden dll associated with the

HomeOldSP infection (only win2k and XP) indicated by this line in your log:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

Doubleclick the dllfix.exe file from the following link and save it to the Windows Desktop. Click on the file after downloading and extract it to the Windows Desktop. It will create  a new folder named DLLFIX.

http://tools.zerosrealm.com/dllfix.exe

In the DLLFIX folder:

1.Run start.bat and press option 1. 'output.txt' will be created in the folder

(note : it's best to post that report together with a HijackThis log in your topic, so

experts can have a look as well)

2. IF hidden dll was successfully found, run start.bat again and choose option 2. Hit

'1' and enter dll name manually.

3. If dll was not found after first running start.bat :

Run start.bat again and choose option '2'. You must reboot after doing so.

4. Download and run AdAware : http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

(make sure you have latest updates) and run it.

5. Post a new hijackthis log, and a new output.txt after the fix

6. You can also run CWShredder finally to clean up any extra entries.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip version 1.57.0

Follow the directions for running the program at the next link.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=47

At bleepingcomputer.com start reading at the section that says:

You can download this program here: CWShredder

(Note...we have noticed recently some CWS variants are harder to remove unless the shredder is run in Safe Mode...hit F8 while booting to enter Safe Mode and run the shredder.) Make sure you FIX any items it finds!

Post back a new log and comments after running the fix. Also a copy of the output.txt would be great.

OK..................

I ran the dll fix thing - the first output.txt that i had (i thought I saved it, but it disappeared) said that the file C:\Windows\System32\AHEACND.DLL was suspicious

The aheacnd.dll is the one that has been on my AVG popups claiming it has a Trojan - even though AVG can't find it.  (This refers to the first Trojan I told you about before; not the one that I cut and pasted.)

I followed your instructions with the dllfix and it rebooted.  I was still getting the AVG popup saying there was a Trojan in the aheacnd.dll file.

Then I ran the Ad aware and it didn't find anything substantial.

I ran CWShredder in regular mode and in safe mode and it found nothing.

SO then I went into safe mode again and found the aheacnd.dll file and deleted it - hopefull this is okay!  It worked for the last one!  BUT then I ran the dllfix thing again and it found a NEW suspicious dll file - COMJKF.DLL.  I ran Hijackthis again as well.  Here are the latest logs.  (I only ran the 'option 1' in the dllfix the second time - i didn't take any other actions.)

I'll be gone for the weekend - battle will commence on tuesday.  Thanks for all your help!  You should take a day off too.

Andrea

Well, I went to delete the new 'suspicious' file and it didn't work.  I ran the #2 option on the dllfix and inputed the file.  Then it rebooted.  Then I tried to delete the file in safe mode and in normal mode and it didn't work.  It said that it couldn't delete the file saying "access denied" then it said "make sure the disk is not full or write prtocted and that the file is not currently in use."  here are my two logs

In Safe Mode stop the process of that file by hitting three keys at the same time: Shift, Control, and Escape. In Processes stop that .dll file. Then go delete it.

I rebooted in safe mode and looked at the processes.  The .dll wasn't there.  There were only .exe files.  =(  I went into windows explorer and looked at the properties of the comkjf.dll file.  It says it is a 'read-only' file.  If I un-check the 'read-only' box will I be able to delete it??

I win!  The COMKJF.DLL wouldn't let me uncheck the 'read-only' box.  It kept saying acces denied.  So after about 5-10 minutes playing around in the properties menu I was able to change the ownership to me.  Then in the security settings I set it to allow all access to the file to me which included DELETE.  So I very happily deleted it.  Then I ran the dllfix and no suspicious dll's were found!!!  Here are my new logs.
