HiJackThis Log---- Please help!

Welcome :)

That sounds like a neededware infection.

Please print these instructions so you can refer to them easily.

Please download CCleaner:
CCleaner
1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK " Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
2. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
o Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
o Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
o Clean all entries in the "System" section.
o Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
o Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
o Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
o Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
o Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
o Clean any others that you choose.
Exit CCleaner. Do not run it yet.

Download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. 
   
2. Once you have downloaded Ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
3. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. Right click on ewido in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
4. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
5. Press "OK".
6. In Services, click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard.
7. When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
8. In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
9. From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
10. Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window
11. Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
12. On the main screen select the icon "Update". Tthen select the "Update now" link.
13. Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
14. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
    
15. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
16. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
17. Under "Reports"
18. Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
19. Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
20. Close Ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.
    Once in Safe Mode:
    
    Open CCleaner
    
    . Click the " Run Cleaner" button.
    A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
    . Click " OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
    . Click " exit" when done.
    
    
    
    Open Ewido
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan
    • Let the program scan the machine
    While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
    Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop
    • Exit Ewido
    Reboot into normal mode.
    Then, please run this online virus scan:
    ActiveScan
    You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
    Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
    A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
    A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
    Click on Scan Now! >
    If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control ( asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
    From " Select a device to scan...", choose " My Computer"
    Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
    When complete,
    *Save the results from ActiveScan! Click on " See Report", and then on " Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
    
    Please delete your copy of HijackThis. It is running from a temp folder and that is not the best situation.
    Click HERE to download a self-extractable version of HijackThis.
    
    • Double click on hijackthis.exe to extract hijackthis to folder c:\hijackthis.
    • It will extract it to that folder and open the folder for you.
    • It will also create a shortcut on your desktop to HijackThis.
    • 
      
    • It will scan and the log should open in notepad.Click on "Edit > Select
    • All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the
    • log.
    
    Come back here to this thread and paste the HijackThis log in your next reply. Also please copy the results from ActiveScan and paste them here along the report from Ewido.
    DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
    
    You will probably need several posts if your 3 logs are long because the forum software takes a limited amount of text.

We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

* Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
* Click on Tools, General Settings
* Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
* Click Save

After ALL of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.

Run your McAfee. If it finds those files again, make a note of their location and let me know.

Reboot into normal mode after McAfee's scan and rescan with HijackThis.

I just completed the last steps that you gave me. When I ran the McAffe scan it did not detect anything, but it never did to begin with.

I always received messages from McAfee when I had my internet explorer open that said those files were trying to access my computer or were "PUPs". I would click to remove them, but immediatley after they would reappear with the same message from McAfee.

I have not had any problems with the files since I completed these last steps and I hope that is the end of it. However, I have received a new error message during start up. It says " Windows Media Player- An internal application error has occured." I have tried going to the Windows website and reinstalling the Media Player, but I still get the same message.

I am not sure if this error message has anything to do with the problems that I was having before. Should I contact someone else on this matter?

Good job, so far. The malware that put itself into your trusted zones seems to be gone.

When you reported: "I keep receiving messages from my McAfee antivirus that PUPs have been found(multiple, and constant). For example here are just a couple: C:WINDOWS\NDNunistall7_14.exe, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WinStat10.dll."
I thought you meant that McAfee was finding those on your computer. You did have some of it on there.

We did not remove any WMP files, so I'm not sure why you are having a problem with WMP.

If you have tried removing your WMP and reinstalling a fresh copy and that has not worked, post on the XP forum and see if they have any suggestions.
If you absolutely cannot get rid of that WMP error, update ewido and run it again to see if it will clean any additional problems in System Restore. Then do a System Restore and start again with removal of the infection if it shows up (and it may return if your Restore Point is from when you were infected).
** Remember that Defender may prevent you from making changes to the Registry so disable Defender or work in Safemode when you are cleaning.

There is just one more thing we still need to fix with HijackThis. Please boot into Safemode.
Then launch HijackThis and place a check next to this:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - SOFTWARE - (no file)

Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot normally.

Once you get WMP working, it would be good to flush System Restore so that you have clean Restore Points.
If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.

You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.

8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbr.

9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 7.08. It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.

10. Make sure you are using the most udpated version of Java.
If you need to update, remove all prior versions using Add/Remove Programs, and delete the Java folder in Program Files.
You can go here to download the latest version: Sun Java and click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it. When the download is complete, close the browser.
Proceed with reinstalling Java. Reboot.
