HJT Log for Winfixer help

I am new and having trouble with winfixer pop up.  Will you evaluate my Hijackthis log and make recommendations.  It appears I do not have the common "OS BHO MS Events" one.   I am not computer literate so thanks for details.

Thanks,

Mike

Try Symantec's tool at:

Ignore the bit about turning off System Restore.

Post a new log as a reply when done.

I had already downloaded and run the FixVundo.exe.  Here are the results when I ran HJT again.  Thanks so much for your help.  Winfixer is still poping up.

OK.  Let's try it the hard way.

For reference these are the critters we want to get rid of.

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {BB54DE33-E539-4749-BFAC-CC49617E8F2A} - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*asdns] C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe rerun

O20 - Winlogon Notify: antiip - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\piitna.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: asdns - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: avwms - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\smwva.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: dvdabr - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\rbadvd.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: iisbak - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\kabsii.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: kbsvc - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\cvsbk.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: netjava - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\avajten.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: psdrv - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\vrdsp.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: svrdb - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\bdrvs.dat

Start where he says:

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

and Stop where he says:

  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!

  •
The paths the program asks you for would be:

    C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat

and

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe

(If it doesn't like the first path then try:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Mike\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\sndsa.dat)

Please do not use the ones given in the article since they will not work for your infection.

When it reboots make it go back into Safe Mode and repeat as many times as necessary to get rid of all of these:

C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\piitna.dat
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\smwva.dat
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\rbadvd.dat
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\kabsii.dat
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\cvsbk.dat
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\avajten.dat
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\vrdsp.dat
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\bdrvs.dat

I suspect you can get away with using one for the first path and the second for the next path but run HijackThis in between to see if you are making any progress and if the line like this comes back:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*asdns] C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe rerun

If it does then use its path for the second path.

Ron,

I was able to get rid of all but three lines;

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {BB54DE33-E539-4749-BFAC-CC49617E8F2A} - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*asdns] C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe rerun

O20 - Winlogon Notify: asdns - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat

I hope I did it right.  I typed "C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat" (or whatever I was trying to get rid of)  for the first line.  Then C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe for the second line each time.  Was that right.  The instructions said to hit return then F6 then return.  When I hit return, it processed it.  I didn't have to hit F6 & then return.  What can I do now to get rid of these last three?

Thanks again for your help.

Mike

Got a new idea.  Let's try Delater
Save it to your desktop then right click on it and Extract.  Make sure you save the extracted file(s) to C:\Windows.

Now Right click on Start and Explore.
on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

On the first page where it says: Web View, check Use Classic Windows Folders
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Now you need to navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Temp.

Look in the right pane and write down the name of any file that ends in .dat

Now go to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\ and look for .exe or .dat files that have the same names as the .dat files but are spelled backwards.  Write these down.

Now open notepad (Start, Run, notepad, OK) and type:

dellater.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat
dellater.exe C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe

Add similar lines for any other files you may have found.

Now File, SaveAs, (to your desktop) and call it: "del.bat", OK  Do not forget the quotes or it will save the file as del.bat.txt.

Doubleclick on del.bat and then reboot.

Hopefully you will get some complaints about files missing when it reboots.  Then run HJT and check/Fix Checked the usual suspects.  They should now say File Missing or No File.

(thanks to guru at the   TweakXP.com forum for the above idea if it worked.)

Ron,

Unfortunatly it did not work.  Here is the HJT log after I completed your instructions.  I did find a Winfixer2005ScannerSetup.exe file in the C:\Documents and settings\Mike\Localsettings\Temp.  I don't know if this has anything to do with it.

Get Killbox if you don't have it:

Download the killbox:
Save the download to your desktop and then rightclick on it and Extract it to your desktop.

Close Internet Explorer.

Start, Run, msconfig, OK.  When msconfig comes up select the startup page and see if you can find

asdns and uncheck it.  Then OK.  Let it reboot.

Make sure Internet Explorer is not running.

Run Killbox.  Where it says Full Path of File to Delete you need to type or copy (Hightlight and Ctrl + c)
and Paste (move to the killbox and place the cursor in the box and Ctrl + V):
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe
Then check the Replace on Reboot then in the new space that opens below the first box type in

C:\windows\notepad.exe

then the red button.
Do not let it reboot.

Now run atribune's killvundo again and use these paths:

C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat
C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\asdns.*

Any luck?  If not, do you have an XP CD?

Hey Ron,

Well I didn't see anthing in Startup so I continued on and performed the killbox  and then HJT again.  They were still there.

Thanks again for your sticking with me and my problem.  I will wait to hear back from you.

I've been told this beast had a hidden component in its earlier incarnation.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hostx.exe

See if killbox can find the file and kill it on reboot along with the other files.

Ron,

Thanks again for helping me and sticking with me to get this resolved.  Well I have had a little trouble w/ internet connection, I think unrelated. That is what has taken me a few days to get back.

I tried the latest, but I'm not sure I have done it correctly.  The "beast" is still there.  Please check my process.

Here is the process I followed:

Run Killbox.  Where it says Full Path of File to Delete you need to type

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hostx.exe

Then check the Replace on Reboot then in the new space that opens below the first box type in

 C:\windows\notepad.exe

then the red button.

I Did not let it reboot.

Now run atribune's killvundo again

I rebooted my computer into Safe Mode.

  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:
  • Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\System32\hostx.exe
  • Press Enter, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:
  • Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe
  • Press Enter, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {BB54DE33-E539-4749-BFAC-CC49617E8F2A} - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*asdns] C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\asdns.exe rerun

 O20 - Winlogon Notify: asdns - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\sndsa.dat

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!

Let me know what is next.

Thanks

Mike

Did Killbox find the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\hostx.exe or did it say it wasn't there?

When you boot into Safe Mode are you logging in as Administrator or with your usual login?

Try using killbox (Delete on reboot) on
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hostx.exe
and also on  the files we tried to remove with dellater.
then let it reboot.
