I am assuming that you tried to remove the AVG program from the control panel first. Follow these basic instructions for using the AVG uninstaller.

The AVG uninstaller works well in uninstalling AVG. To determine whether you have a 32 bit -or 64 bit operating system see the article here.

sbeetle, Most systems shipped by dell are 32bit, unless specified at the time of ordering.

Use the utilities listed [url=www.avg.com/.../utilities]here[url] that best suits your software. Do not attempt to remove the software from your Registry - there are other ways - let us know.

You need to manually remove certain registry keys. Keys below that you need to delete:
(for 32 bit Windows installations)
(for 64 bit Windows installations)
There is also a removal tool you can download if you do not want to mess around in the registry.

Using Add/Remove Programs followed by the AVG Removal Tool is the recommended way. We have found, however, that this method does leave many remnants in the registry and is not always effective in some cases. As siljaline suggested, please do not attempt to edit the registry.
If you find that you are still having problems, follow with AppRemover. That should get most of it.
I would suggest that you look for a different anti-virus when you are ready to install a new one.

I hope that the last three responders... all today... realize they've reopened a 2.3 year-old thread.

#1. We are still seeing systems with AVG version 8.0 installed. I hope this will help somebody.
/#2. As far as the chap who posted info on editing the registry, everyone needs to know that it is is a procedure which is not recommended, unless done by an expert..
I see no problem with the last few replies here.

Try avg removal tool to get rid of it. CCleaner is a great free tool that is able to uninstall any application. I had the same trouble uninstalling avg and with this tool i was able to remove it without a problem

It is preferable to use the vendor's site for downloading the AVG Removal Tool. Select the version applicable to your operating system. The tool is available from AVG here: http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities
