I hate you kazaa!
Hey, i'd really appreciate any help you could give in removing this file that my brother downloaded onto my families computer. He uses kazaa all the time to download music and he recently downloaded this file that is so incredibly evil that it is beyond comprehension. Every time I try to delete it the message "being used by another person or program" comes up and cpu usage goes up to 100%. I've run mcaffe virus scanner, system restore, ad aware 6.0, spybot search and destroy, and the simple virus scanner that is on the forum. I also started up my computer in safe mode and entered with the administrator account and the same message comes up.
Please help me!

presto9monkey:
We need you to download and install an analysis and repair tool called Hijackthis.
Go here and download the file: http://tomcoyote.com/hjt
Please unzip Hijackthis.zip into a new folder you create in the root (first) level of the C: drive. Name this folder HJT for best and safest results. (don't unzip it into a temp folder or run the file from a temp folder, or the Windows Desktop, etc...as it needs a safe folder to keep backup logs). Also when people post here and place it on the Desktop the log usually shows their full name since their Windows user profile is commonly named with their full name. We try not to disturb your privacy. *;-)
See this link for graphical instruction: http://russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/createhjtfolder.htm
See my entire Hijackthis FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) at:
http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm
After downloading, and unzipping the hijackthis file into a safe folder you create (preferably a folder named HJT in the first level of the C: drive)...run Hijackthis, click on the 'scan' button and then 'save log' button.
Copy and paste the contents of the text file you save into a reply to this message. A lot of posters make mistakes here in copying and pasting so reread the left info sidebar called Copy and Paste at http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt
Special Notice! Hijackthis is a powerful tool that edits the brains of Windows (the Registry). DO NOT FIX anything in the Hijackthis log screen without assistance from the experts! Most of the line items in the scanned log are normal for Windows operation. Hijackthis should identify the vast majority of your problems and enable us to help you clean them off your system.
Stay in this thread for continuity. Reply to this message.
HTH (Hope that Helps)

KazaaBegone is a Kazaa uninstaller which scans and removes all elements of all Kazaa versions, as well as all of the bundled software that comes with it. You have the option to just search for the components or to search and destroy

Post a Hijackthis log first before thinking about the Kazaa removal tool...it can be tricky.
From Merijn...the author of Hijackthis and KazaaBegone:
"KazaaBegone: A Kazaa uninstaller which scans and removes all elements of all Kazaa versions, as well as all of the bundled software that comes with it.
Warning: This version has a bug that can cause your Internet connection to be broken when removing New.Net, WebHancer or CommonName. An update is being worked on. If you still want to use KazaaBegone, download LSPFix to fix your Internet connection (download it before you run KazaaBegone, of course).
Currently at version: 1.10"

With no other windows open click on fix checked button in Hijackthis.
Reboot to SAFE MODE and Show HIDDEN FILES and folders
FAQ 8 and 9 on this page: http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm
Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:
Drill on down and delete the following files and/or folders:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\ADDRES~1 folder...will be longer name
C:\Program Files\CommonSearch folder
C:\Program Files\Power Scan folder
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc folder
C:\Program Files\Cosmo Popup Blocker folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\CMEII folder
C:\Program Files\Bargain Buddy folder
C:\program files\altnet folder
C:\Program Files\WebSavingsfromEbates folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\urod.exe file
C:\WINDOWS\icg32.exe file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winservn.exe file
Reboot in normal mode Windows and run Disk Cleaner: type cleanmgr at Start/Run. Scan all hard drives and check all categories at the end and click OK.
Download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware) at the link below. Use Spybot first. I know you have Adaware, but I doubt you have used the custom scanning options detailed below.
Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.
Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...go slow on the directions for the custom setup of Adaware. These custom settings will be retained for future custom scans so don't go nuts thinking you have to do this every time you run it! It may take you five minutes to set them up, but it's worth it.
http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html
After cleaning up the malware debris with these two programs, reboot and browse a bit, then post a new log.

After the final all clear is given by us you should flush your Restore Points for XP. That means disabling the Restore Point, rebooting to flush it, then re-enabling a new Restore Point. The reason why we need to do this is to purge the bad files hidden in System Restore which can't be cleaned by your antivirus programs.
See FAQ 12 here: http://www.russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/faqhijackthis.htm

Send a new log...iexplorer.exe is RapidBlaster. BTW...to delete a file in Safe Mode that is in memory you have to stop the process in Task Manager.

Thanks for the help with hijackthis so far. Is there any site that shows all the things that can be removed from the registry and all the things that need to stay there? That would be great. Lasass.exe is a virus right?

Startup lists:
http://russelltexas.com/spywareinfo/malware.htm (bottom of page and in middle of page about Pacman's.
Lasass.exe:
Quite possibly a virus...the Sasser worm is more commonly lasasss.exe.
Don't confuse these with the legitimate Windows file:
lsass.exe
Fix the line entry below in Hijackthis and reboot to Safe Mode and delete all the contents in your temp folder, but don't delete the foldername temp. (Enable Hidden mode or you won't see it). Post back with a fresh log.

I deleted the file with hijackthis and then rebooted in safe mode while there I did a search on MCAPPINS.EXE and it is part of mcaffe virus scanner. I did remove everything except that from my temp folder. The problem continues.

Not a legitimate folder for a McAfee file and in my opinion all temp files are expendable. Be aware viruses do overwrite legitimate filenames. Point to ponder. But it's probably just a failed Mcafee update..
The physical dump message is one I see often on badly infected machines. MS has no definitive word on it. I assume Registry hive damage is the cause, but that's just a guess.
Everything else looks OK...you might run Spybot and adaware a few more times and see if they clear any more debris. There were a lot of dirty pests and Hijackthis doesn't clean all the elements.
Cheers,

Thanks Jim...that gives me a starting place for more research on why it pops up.
